Amit Shah Tables Contentious Bill To Remove Prime Minister And Chief Ministers Over Criminal Cases

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has proposed a contentious law in the Lok Sabha. This legislation allows for the removal of the Prime Minister and Chief Ministers if they are imprisoned for 30 days, even without a conviction. The Opposition has strongly opposed this Constitution amendment Bill, labelling it as "draconian" and accusing the ruling BJP of attempting to turn the nation into a "police state".

Senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra expressed her disapproval, stating, "I see it as a completely draconian thing as it goes against everything. To say it as an anti-corruption measure is just to pull a veil across the eyes of the people." She further criticised the bill's potential misuse, suggesting that any Chief Minister could be arrested for 30 days without conviction, leading to their removal from office.

Opposition Voices Concerns Over New Law

Hyderabad MP and AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi voiced his concerns about the bill's implications. He remarked that the BJP government aims to transform India into a "police state". Owaisi questioned who would have the authority to arrest the Prime Minister under such a law. He emphasised that power is not eternal and pledged to oppose these bills.

Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee also criticised the government's intentions. He accused them of being focused solely on accumulating power, wealth, and control without accountability. Banerjee condemned what he described as an authoritarian approach and opposed the introduction of this constitutional amendment bill.

BJP Defends Controversial Legislation

Among those supporting the Bill is BJP MP Manan Kumar Mishra. He accused the Opposition of trying to divert public attention from important issues. Mishra argued that preventing individuals who have been jailed for over 30 days from holding ministerial positions is crucial work. He criticised the Opposition for obstructing Parliament's proceedings.
