Amit Shah Inaugurates Durga Puja in Kolkata, Prays for End to Corruption and Atrocities

Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited Kolkata on Monday, October 16, to inaugurate a Durga Puja. During his visit, he expressed his hope that the goddess would soon put an end to the corruption and atrocities that have plagued West Bengal.

Shah Pledges to Continue Fight for Political Transformation

While emphasizing that he would not delve into political matters, Shah vowed to continue his fight in the state until a political transformation takes place. His comments drew a sharp response from the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), which highlighted issues of lawlessness in Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-governed states.

Shah Praises Durga Puja Pandal Design

Despite the political tension, Shah took the time to appreciate the design of the pandal marquee, which resembles the Ram temple in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh. He noted that the Ram Mandir is set to be inaugurated in January, but the people of Kolkata have already celebrated its inauguration through this Durga Puja pandal.

TMC Hits Back at Shah

In a quick retort, the TMC leadership pointed out that those who had once alleged that Durga Puja festivities were not allowed in West Bengal are now rushing to the state to inaugurate pandals. TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee said that this is a testament to the power of Bengal's culture and heritage, as well as the victory of truth.

BJP Councillor Defends Use of "Bharat"

Meanwhile, the Santosh Mitra Square puja committee put up placards referring to Shah as "Union Home Minister of Bharat" and not "Union Home Minister of India." When asked about the reason behind this, BJP councillor and President of the Santosh Mitra Square puja committee, Sajal Ghosh, said that there is nothing wrong with it, as "In Bengali, we say Bharat." This follows the controversy over the country's name after G20 Summit invitations were sent in the name of the "President of Bharat" and not the President of India.

Amit Shah's visit to Kolkata and his inauguration of a Durga Puja pandal have sparked political controversy, with the TMC and BJP trading barbs. While Shah expressed his hope for an end to corruption and atrocities in the state, the TMC highlighted issues of lawlessness in BJP-ruled states. Despite the political tension, the Durga Puja festivities continue to bring joy and celebration to the people of Kolkata.
