Amid Farmer Unrest, Centre Announces Rs 25 Hike In Sugarcane FRP For 2024-25 Season
Amid the ongoing standoff between farmers and the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government regarding the legalisation of Minimum Support Price (MSP) and other demands, the Centre provided significant relief to sugarcane farmers on Wednesday. Confirming this development, the Modi government announced an increase in the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) of sugarcane by Rs 25 to Rs 340 per quintal for the 2014-25 season.
During a press briefing in New Delhi, Union Minister Anurag Thakur stated that the decision to raise the sugarcane FRP was made during a Cabinet meeting chaired by PM Modi. He reiterated the government's commitment to farmers' welfare and doubling their income.

"To ensure a fair and reasonable price for sugarcane to farmers by sugar mills, the government has decided to set the price at Rs 340 per quintal for the 2024-25 season, starting October 1, 2024, with a sugar recovery rate of 10.25 percent," Thakur explained.
Increase in FRP to benefit 5 crore sugarcane farmers
A government release highlighted that the revised FRP would contribute to the prosperity of sugarcane farmers. "Despite paying the highest price for sugarcane globally, the Modi government has ensured the lowest price for domestic buyers. Over 5 crore sugarcane farmers and lakhs of others involved in the sugar sector will benefit from the revised FRP," the release stated.
It is important to note that the FRP is based on the recommendations of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP). Changes to the sugarcane FRP are made after consultation with state governments and other stakeholders.
Other decisions taken during the Cabinet meeting
"To bring about a significant change in animal husbandry, dairy, and poultry, the government will provide a 50 percent capital subsidy of up to Rs 50 lakhs to individuals, private companies, start-ups, Farmers Cooperative societies (FCOs), and other organizations under the National Livestock Mission," Thakur announced. The National Livestock Mission, a sub-scheme under the Ministry of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, aims to boost breeding farms for horses, donkeys, and camels.
The Union Minister also disclosed that the Modi government had relaxed Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) norms in the space sector. This relaxation allows 100 percent overseas investment in satellite component manufacturing.
'Government ready to engage with farmers'
Referring to farmers as "brothers" and "annadatas" (providers of food), the Union Minister expressed the government's readiness to hold discussions with them on their issues in the future. He also highlighted various government initiatives aimed at doubling farmers' income and achieving higher growth in the agriculture and allied sectors.
