Punjab Minister Aman Arora Sentenced to Two Years in Prison for Assault
Punjab Minister Aman Arora and eight others have been sentenced to two years in prison for an assault case that occurred in 2008. The court found them guilty of attacking Aroras brother-in-law in his house.
In a significant development, Punjab Minister Aman Arora and eight others were sentenced to two years of imprisonment by a court in Sangrur district on Thursday, December 21. The verdict came in a 15-year-old case where Arora's relative had accused him of assault within his residence.
Court's Verdict
The court of Gurbhinder Singh Johal, Sub-divisional Judicial Magistrate, Sunam, found Arora and the other eight individuals guilty in a case filed in 2008 based on a complaint lodged by the Minister's brother-in-law, Rajinder Deepa. Arora currently holds various portfolios in the Bhagwant Mann cabinet, including new and renewable energy, printing and stationery, employment generation, and training and governance reforms.
Charges and Sentence
The nine individuals were booked under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 452 (house-trespass) and 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt). The court sentenced them to two years of imprisonment under section 452 and one year of imprisonment under section 323 of the IPC. Notably, both sentences will run concurrently.
Court's Reasoning
In its order, the court stated that the prosecution successfully proved the guilt of the accused individuals beyond a reasonable doubt. The court relied on oral and documentary evidence to conclude that the accused persons, acting with a common intention, caused simple injuries to the complainant after trespassing into his house with the intent to cause harm.
Arora's Response
Following the conviction, Arora addressed reporters in Sangrur, expressing his intention to challenge the verdict in a higher court. He asserted his unwavering faith in the judicial system. Arora also revealed that a compromise had been reached between him and Deepa in 2012, but his brother-in-law later reneged on the agreement.
Legal Proceedings
Advocate Sushil, representing Deepa, disclosed that Deepa had filed complaints against ten individuals, out of which one passed away during the trial. He further mentioned that the convicts filed an application before the court, seeking permission to file an appeal in a higher court. According to Advocate Sushil, the convicts have a 30-day timeframe to file their appeal.
The sentencing of Punjab Minister Aman Arora and eight others in a 15-year-old assault case has garnered significant attention. As the legal process unfolds, it remains to be seen how the higher court will address the appeal filed by the convicts. The outcome of this case will undoubtedly have implications for the political landscape of Punjab and the ongoing discourse surrounding accountability and justice.
