Alok Shukla Honoured with Goldman Environmental Prize for Saving Chhattisgarh Forests

In a significant victory for environmental conservation, Alok Shukla, a dedicated forest and tribal rights activist, has been announced as the recipient of the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize 2024. This accolade, often referred to as the Green Nobel, is awarded for Shukla's instrumental role in leading a community-driven campaign that successfully prevented the establishment of 21 planned coal mines in Chhattisgarh, thereby saving approximately 4.45 lakh acres of biodiversity-rich forests. The Goldman Environmental Prize annually honors environmental heroes from the world's six inhabited continental regions for their grassroots efforts in protecting the environment and promoting sustainability.

Shukla Wins Environmental Prize

The Goldman Environmental Foundation highlighted that the government's decision to cancel the auction of these coal mines in Hasdeo Aranya was a direct result of Shukla's campaign. Hasdeo Aranya, known as the lungs of Chhattisgarh, stands out as one of India's largest intact forest areas, crucial for its rich biodiversity and ecological significance. "This recognition truly belongs to the brave Adivasi men, women, and children who have been continually fighting to save the rich Hasdeo forests," Shukla remarked, emphasizing the collective effort behind this achievement.

Shukla's victory is not just a personal accolade but a beacon for global environmental movements. At 43, he has shown that grassroots activism can indeed make a significant impact on global environmental policies. The dense and biodiverse Hasdeo Aranya forests are home to 25 endangered species, 92 bird species, and 167 rare and medicinal plant species. This area is not only an ecological treasure but also a lifeline for nearly 15,000 tribals who depend on it for their livelihood, cultural identity, and sustenance.

Despite being declared a no-go zone for mining by the Union Environment Ministry in 2010 due to its rich biodiversity, formal legislation was never passed to protect the Hasdeo forests. Successive governments have eyed this area for its underlying coal reserves, estimated at five billion tons. However, Shukla's efforts since 2012 have been pivotal in mobilizing local communities against such initiatives. His leadership in creating the Hasdeo Aranya Bachao Sangharsh Samiti and organizing protests has been instrumental in safeguarding this vital ecological zone.

The sustained protests and strategic actions led by Shukla and local villagers resulted in the government withdrawing three mines from public auction in September 2020. A significant march to Raipur in October 2021 with 500 villagers further pressured authorities to cancel additional mining operations. The campaign gained momentum on social media with the hashtag #SaveHasdeo, inspiring nationwide support through creative acts of solidarity.

In July 2022, a resolution adopted by the state legislature against mining in Hasdeo Aranya marked a turning point. By July 2022, the auction of the remaining coal blocks was officially cancelled. The Goldman Environmental Prize, established in 1989 by San Francisco civic leaders Richard and Rhoda Goldman, recognizes such impactful environmental activism. Shukla's recognition at an upcoming ceremony in San Francisco underscores the global importance of preserving our planet's natural resources and biodiversity.

Shukla's achievement is a testament to the power of community activism and its crucial role in addressing climate change challenges. It serves as an inspiring example for environmental movements worldwide, demonstrating that determined grassroots efforts can lead to substantial environmental victories.
