Jharkhand Floor Test: CM Champai Soren-Led JMM Govt 'Confident' As Trust Vote Begins

Jharkhand's new Chief Minister, Champai Soren, stands before the Assembly today at 11 AM to prove his majority in a crucial floor test. He assumed office following the resignation of his predecessor, Hemant Soren, who stepped down before being arrested by the Enforcement Directorate last week.

Jharkhand Floor Test: Champai Soren Faces Confidence Vote Today

The ruling JMM-led alliance, which had secured its MLAs in a Hyderabad resort to thwart any poaching attempts, brought them back to Ranchi on Sunday evening.

While the JMM asserts that the floor test is a mere formality, citing the support of 47 MLAs, the BJP argues that the coalition's decision to seclude its MLAs reflects a lack of confidence.

JHARKHAND FLOOR TEST: Here are the key updates

  • According to JMM's Manoj Pandey, the floor test is a mere "formality," stating, "The spirit of the opposition is already low seeing the numbers and the unity of the INDIA alliance. The figure can also cross 48. Our party, our alliance is united." JMM general secretary Supriyo Bhattacharya affirmed that the Champai Soren government has the backing of no fewer than 47 MLAs.
  • BJP spokesperson Pratul Shah Deo expressed that regardless of the floor test's outcome, "Jharkhand has lost." He criticized the circumstances surrounding Hemant Soren's arrest, highlighting the state's humiliation on a national and international scale.
  • Leader of the opposition in Jharkhand, Amar Kumari Bauri, criticized the previous government led by Hemant Soren, accusing them of prioritizing corruption over fulfilling promises. He expressed hope that Champai Soren would fulfill the commitments for which they were elected.
  • Former Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren has arrived at state Assembly for new government's floor test.
  • On Sunday, JMM-led alliance MLAs, who had been at a resort in Hyderabad for the past three days, were flown back to Ranchi. They expressed confidence in winning the trust vote, claiming support from 48 to 50 legislators. JMM lawmaker Mithilesh Thakur suggested that some BJP MLAs also support the 'Mahagathbandhan' in the state.
  • Champai Soren, amid allegations of a delayed swearing-in by the governor, formed a government on Friday, claiming the support of 47 MLAs in the 81-member Jharkhand assembly. The BJP-led NDA has 29 MLAs in the assembly.
  • After Hemant Soren's arrest on January 31, Champai Soren approached the governor, claiming the support of 47 MLAs, even though some did not sign the support letter. Reports suggest that some JMM MLAs who did not support Champai Soren may abstain from participating in the floor test.
  • Former Chief Minister Hemant Soren, currently in jail, is attending the floor test after receiving permission from a special court in Ranchi. He received a warm welcome with slogans of 'Hemant Soren Zindabad' inside the Assembly.
  • JMM MLA Lobin Hembrom criticized the decision to seclude MLAs at a lavish resort in Hyderabad. However, JMM leadership maintains that Hembrom will vote in favor of the coalition government.
