Maharashtra Deputy CM Takes a Dig at Actor-MP Amol Kolhe
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar criticized actor-turned-politician Amol Kolhe for offering to resign just two years into his term as a Member of Parliament. Pawar accused Kolhe of neglecting his constituency and prioritizing his acting career.
In a recent political discourse, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar made some intriguing remarks about the involvement of celebrities in politics. Pawar's comments were specifically directed towards actor and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MP Amol Kolhe, who belongs to the Sharad Pawar faction of the party.

Pawar's Criticism of Kolhe
Pawar, while addressing a farmers' meet in Kolhe's constituency of Shirur in Pune district, expressed his reservations about Kolhe's political capabilities. He revealed that Kolhe had offered to resign just two years into his term as an MP, citing concerns about his acting career. Pawar also questioned Kolhe's visibility in the constituency over the past four years.
Celebrities in Politics: A Question of Mass Appeal
Pawar went on to discuss the broader issue of celebrities entering politics. He suggested that political parties often turn to celebrities for their mass appeal, especially when they perceive a particular opposing candidate as undefeatable. Pawar cited examples of actors like Hema Malini, Sunny Deol, Govinda, Rajesh Khanna, Shatrughan Sinha, and Amitabh Bachchan who have contested elections in the past.
Pawar raised concerns about whether celebrities genuinely possess the interest and capabilities to undertake development work in their constituencies. He acknowledged that politicians themselves share some responsibility for bringing celebrities into politics without thoroughly assessing their suitability.
Kolhe's Response
In response to Pawar's remarks, Kolhe released a video message defending his record as an MP. He highlighted his achievement of winning the Sansad Ratna award three times for effectively raising the issues of his constituency in Parliament. Kolhe also took a swipe at Raigad MP Sunil Tatkare, who is the state unit president of the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party, claiming that he outperforms Tatkare in terms of parliamentary work.
The exchange between Pawar and Kolhe underscores the ongoing debate about the role of celebrities in politics. While celebrities can bring name recognition and mass appeal, their commitment to public service and their ability to deliver tangible results for their constituents remain crucial factors in determining their effectiveness as politicians.
