Airlines should carry equal number of Hindi, English newspapers, says DGCA

Lalit Gupta, joint director general, DGCA on Wednesday iin a letter directed the airlines to ensure the aircraft carry equal number of Hindi and English newspapers.

Gupta said that it has been seen that the Indian aircrafts do not carry Hindi newspapers and magazines or carry them in limited numbers. He further said that this goes against the official language policy of Indian union.

The decision was taken to help bring at par the number of Hindi and English language newspapers and magazines in flights.

The directive comes amid efforts by airlines to reduce costs and save aviation fuel by carrying less material on-board.

Earlier this month, Air India decided to stop serving non-vegetarian meals to its economy class passengers on domestic flights, sparking a controversy which linked the move religious ideology which is alleged to be promoted by the government. However, the Air India asserted that the initiative was taken to cut costs.
