Air India Reduces 38 International Flights and Suspends Three Routes Amid Operational Challenges
Air India has announced a reduction of 38 international flights weekly and the suspension of services on three overseas routes from 21 June to 15 July. This decision follows disruptions caused by a fatal plane crash in Ahmedabad on 12 June. The airline aims to stabilise its schedule and minimise last-minute passenger inconvenience.

The airline's statement detailed that these changes will affect flights on 18 international routes. Services on the Delhi-Nairobi, Amritsar-London Gatwick, and Goa Mopa-London Gatwick routes will be suspended until mid-July. The Delhi-Nairobi route operates four times weekly, while the other two routes have three weekly flights each.
Flight Reductions and Safety Measures
Air India plans to reduce flights on several routes connecting North America, Europe, Australia, and the Far East. In North America, affected routes include Delhi-Toronto, Delhi-Vancouver, Delhi-San Francisco, Delhi-Chicago, and Delhi-Washington. These reductions are due to enhanced pre-flight safety checks and airspace closures in the Middle East.
In Europe, flight services will be reduced on routes such as Delhi-London Heathrow, Bengaluru-London Heathrow, Amritsar-Birmingham, and others. Similar reductions will occur on routes like Delhi-Melbourne, Delhi-Sydney, Delhi-Tokyo Haneda, and Delhi-Seoul Incheon.
CEO's Message and Passenger Support
Campbell Wilson, Air India's CEO and Managing Director, explained that enhanced safety checks are being conducted on Boeing 787 and Boeing 777 aircraft. These checks require additional time and may impact schedules. Consequently, the airline is reducing its international wide-body flights by about 15% from 20 June through mid-July.
"Regrettably, the time required to perform these enhanced safety checks... has led to a higher-than-usual number of cancellations," Wilson stated. He apologised for any inconvenience caused by these changes and assured passengers of proactive communication regarding alternative arrangements.
Passenger Compensation Options
The airline is reaching out to affected passengers to offer options such as re-accommodation on other flights, complimentary rescheduling, or full refunds based on their preferences. "We understand that this temporary reduction to our schedule may affect your travel plans," Wilson reiterated in his message.
This reduction in services also allows Air India to maintain more backup aircraft for unforeseen issues. The airline remains committed to ensuring passenger safety while addressing operational challenges during this period.
