Police Complaint Filed Against AI-Generated Videos of Lord Jagannath That Offended Devotees
The Jagannath temple authorities have lodged a police complaint against a social media account for sharing AI-generated videos of Lord Jagannath, which have offended devotees. The visuals are deemed objectionable and fabricated, sparking significant outrage.
The Jagannath temple authorities in Puri have lodged a police complaint against a social media account for spreading AI-generated images and videos of Lord Jagannath. These visuals, which went viral, have caused significant outrage among devotees. The complaint was filed by the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) at Singhadwar Police Station against the account "vishvrajcreation" for allegedly sharing fabricated content.

According to the SJTA, the AI-generated images and videos are unacceptable and have been shared by an individual using the handle "vishvrajcreation." The temple administration's Special Security Officer stated that this content has offended religious sentiments and caused widespread resentment among devotees. The visuals include a video showing milk being poured over Lord Jagannath using a crane, which is entirely fictional and not part of any temple tradition.
AI-Generated Content Sparks Outrage
Jagannath culture researcher Bhaskar Mishra expressed that these fake visuals have deeply hurt the sentiments of Lord Jagannath's devotees. Temple officials noted that while unauthorized photography inside the temple has occurred before, this is the first instance of AI being used to create disrespectful content about the deity. The Shree Jagannath Temple Managing Committee (SJTMC), which governs the 12th-century shrine, has decided to amend legal provisions to criminalize such activities.
The SJTMC aims to make it illegal and punishable to create or circulate AI-generated content that dishonours the deity. This decision reflects the committee's commitment to preserving the sanctity of the temple and protecting devotees' sentiments. The use of artificial intelligence in creating misleading visuals marks a new challenge for temple authorities in maintaining traditional values.
In response to this incident, there is a growing call for stricter regulations on social media content related to religious figures. The temple administration hopes that legal amendments will deter future occurrences of similar incidents. As technology advances, safeguarding cultural and religious heritage becomes increasingly important.
This situation highlights the need for vigilance in monitoring digital platforms to prevent misuse of technology in ways that could harm religious sentiments. The authorities are determined to address this issue promptly to maintain respect for Lord Jagannath and his devotees.
