AI-171 Crash: Tata Group Launches ₹500 Crore Memorial Trust For Victims And First Responders

In response to the tragic Air India AI-171 crash in Ahmedabad, Tata Sons and Tata Trusts have jointly pledged ₹500 crore towards a newly formed memorial trust, each contributing ₹250 crore. The trust is aimed at supporting the victims' families, injured passengers, and reconstruction of the damaged infrastructure, including the hostel of B.J. Medical College.

Aid for Victims and Rebuilding Efforts

The fund will be utilized for ex-gratia payments to families of those who perished, comprehensive medical treatment for survivors, and reconstruction of hostel facilities damaged in the incident. The support extends beyond direct victims to include first responders, healthcare workers, disaster relief staff, social workers, and government officials who were part of the emergency response. Tata Sons emphasized that the trust seeks to assist those who endured psychological trauma during rescue and relief operations.

Leadership of the Memorial Trust

A five-member Board of Trustees will manage the trust. Two trustees have been announced: S Padmanabhan, a senior Tata executive, and Sidharth Sharma, General Counsel at Tata Sons. The remaining three members will be appointed in due course.

Details of the Ahmedabad Air India Tragedy

The fatal crash resulted in the death of 241 out of 242 people onboard, along with 19 fatalities on the ground. According to the preliminary investigation by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), both fuel control switches were mistakenly set to the "cutoff" position just after takeoff. Within three seconds of leaving the runway, the Boeing 787 aircraft suffered an engine stall, leading to the catastrophic accident.

Earlier, Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran had pledged ₹1 crore in compensation to the families of each deceased passenger and committed to rebuilding the hostel infrastructure. The new ₹500 crore trust reaffirms and expands that promise.

Operational Timeline

The trust will begin functioning after completing registration with tax authorities and fulfilling all required operational formalities.
