Ahmedabad: Narmada dam's height to be raised
According to the Narmada Bachao Andolan, a people's movement against the dam, there are about 2,50,000 people residing in area which will be submerged.
Social activist and AAP leader Medha Patkar, who has been a part of the Narmada Bachao Andolan has called this move unjust. "It is undemocratic and it is injustice to the people living in the submergence area and illegal," she said, according to an IBN Live article.
"The ministry concerned should come together and assess the ground situation first," she added.
In 2006, the Narmada Control Authority had allowed the dam height to be raised up to 121.92 metres. Now the increased height will assure water for irrigation to an additional area of 6.8 lakh hectares, an additional 40% power generation, and enhanced water supply, says a TOI report.
