West Bengal Junior Doctors Announce Partial Lifting of Cease Work Following Government Agreement
Junior doctors in West Bengal have decided to partially resume duties in emergency and essential services at state hospitals starting Saturday. This decision follows the state government's acceptance of most of their demands. The doctors had been on strike for 41 days after the tragic rape and murder of a woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The doctors announced they would end their sit-in protest outside Swasthya Bhawan on Friday. Before doing so, they plan to march from Swasthya Bhawan, the state health department's headquarters, to the CBI office at CGO Complex in Salt Lake. "We are withdrawing our cease work partially," said one of the protesting doctors after a general body meeting.
Doctors' Partial Return to Work
Given the flood situation in West Bengal and the government's agreement to some of their demands, the doctors will rejoin emergency and essential services partially from Saturday. However, they will not be working in the Out Patient Department (OPD) during this period. The decision reflects their commitment to addressing urgent medical needs while continuing their protest.
The protesting doctors have stated that they will wait for a week to see if all promises made by the West Bengal government are implemented. If these promises remain unfulfilled, they have warned that they will resume their cease work. "Our fight for justice has not ended," they emphasized, highlighting their ongoing struggle for accountability and reform.
March to CBI Office
The planned march to the CBI office signifies a crucial step in their protest strategy. It underscores their demand for justice and transparency in investigating the incident at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The doctors' actions reflect a broader call for systemic changes within the healthcare sector.
The partial withdrawal of their strike is seen as a gesture of goodwill towards the government while maintaining pressure for fulfilling commitments. The junior doctors' movement has drawn significant attention, highlighting issues within the healthcare system that require urgent addressal.
This development marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing negotiations between the junior doctors and the state government. Both parties are expected to engage constructively to resolve outstanding issues and ensure better working conditions and safety for healthcare professionals.
