Junior Doctors in West Bengal Partially Lift Cease Work to Resume Emergency Services Amid Government Agreement

Junior doctors in West Bengal have decided to partially end their strike and resume emergency services at state hospitals from Saturday. This decision follows the state government's acceptance of most of their demands. The doctors had been protesting for 41 days after a female doctor was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College on August 9.

West Bengal Doctors Partially Resume Emergency Services

The doctors announced they would end their sit-in outside Swasthya Bhawan on Friday. Before doing so, they plan to march from Swasthya Bhawan, the health department's headquarters, to the CBI office in Salt Lake. This decision comes amid the ongoing flood situation in West Bengal, prompting the doctors to return to essential services.

Protest Continues Despite Partial Resumption

Despite resuming some duties, the doctors will not work in the Outpatient Department (OPD). They have stated that their fight for justice is not over. "We will wait for a week for the West Bengal government to implement all its promises," said one doctor. If these promises are not met, they plan to resume their strike.

The state government has issued directives aimed at improving safety and security at hospitals. However, no specific timeline has been provided for these changes. The doctors emphasised that while they achieved some goals during their protest, many issues remain unresolved.

Leadership Changes and Future Plans

In response to the protests, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee transferred Kolkata Police Chief Vineet Goyal and replaced him with Manoj Kumar Verma. Two senior health officials were also removed. Despite these changes, the doctors insist their agitation is not over.

"We are committed to pushing forward if our demands are not fulfilled," said Dr. Debashis Haldar. After meeting with the Chief Secretary, they received assurances that safety measures would be implemented but lacked a specific timeline.

Continued Vigilance and Community Support

The doctors plan to monitor the administration closely as they resume partial duties on Saturday. They have also announced plans to operate Abhaya Clinics in flood-affected areas to assist those in need. "It is our duty to support those who stood by us," they said.

The junior doctors submitted a draft of key points from their meeting with the government to Chief Secretary Manoj Pant on Thursday. They await a response from the state regarding these points.

The West Bengal government issued directives on Thursday evening concerning healthcare professionals' safety and working conditions, stating these should be implemented immediately.
