After Talks With Jaishankar, PM Modi To Meet Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi Today

Prime Minister Modi is meeting Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi for the first time in three years, aiming to improve India-China relations ahead of the SCO summit.

Prime Minister Modi is set to meet Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi today at 5:30 PM at his residence, 7 Lok Kalyan Marg. This meeting marks Wang's first visit to India in three years. It comes just before Modi's scheduled trip to China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, where he will meet President Xi Jinping.

The relationship between India and China has been strained since a border clash five years ago. However, recent developments indicate a warming of ties. Beijing has eased restrictions on urea exports, while New Delhi has resumed issuing tourist visas to Chinese nationals. Additionally, Indian businesses are increasingly seeking collaborations with Chinese firms for technology transfers and other deals.

Efforts to Normalise Relations

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday met with Wang Yi in New Delhi, emphasising the desire for improved relations between the two countries. "Having seen a difficult period in our relationship, both nations now seek to move ahead," Jaishankar stated. He stressed that differences should not escalate into disputes or conflicts.

During their discussions, Jaishankar highlighted India's request for China to lift restrictions on rare earth mineral exports. The two ministers also talked about the global situation and the need for a fair and balanced world order. "Reformed multilateralism is also the call of the day," Jaishankar noted.

Global Economic Stability and Security

Jaishankar underscored the importance of maintaining stability in the global economy amid current challenges. He also pointed out that combating terrorism in all its forms remains a top priority for India.

Wang's visit is part of broader efforts by both nations to mend ties after the deadly Galwan Valley clashes in 2020 severely strained their relationship. The visit is also significant against the backdrop of rising tensions between India and the US due to increased tariffs imposed by former President Donald Trump on Indian goods.

Modi's upcoming visit to China will be his first in seven years if confirmed. It represents an opportunity for further dialogue with President Xi Jinping during the SCO summit later this month.
