After Bihar, A Maharashtra Link Surfaces In NEET Paper Leak Case

The recent allegations of malpractice during the NEET medical entrance exam have sparked a major controversy in the entire country.

Initially, Bihar was the focal point of these allegations, but recent developments indicate that the issue might be more widespread, with similar incidents emerging in Maharashtra.

Two teachers from Maharashtra, Sanjay Tukaram Jadhav and Jalil Umarkhan Pathan, were questioned by the Nanded Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) in connection with a NEET paper leak case. Both Jadhav and Pathan, who are associated with Zilla Parishad schools and run private coaching centers in Latur, were detained for several hours before being released.

Authorities have indicated that they may be called for further questioning as the investigation progresses, reported NDTV.

The NEET and UGC-NET exams have been marred by allegations of paper leaks, prompting both central and state authorities to initiate investigations. The CBI has taken over the probe into the NEET paper leaks as the Centre claims to safeguard students' interests.

This move follows the discovery that NEET question papers had been leaked the night before the exam, leading to multiple arrests in Bihar and ongoing investigations into 'solver gangs' - criminal groups that sell leaked exam papers and provide 'Munna bhai' services (proxy candidates) to take exams on behalf of students.

In response to these irregularities, the government has taken some steps. The head of the testing body responsible for NEET has been sacked, and a high-level panel has been formed to address the issues. Additionally, a new law has been introduced to curb paper leaks and other examination malpractices.

These actions come in the wake of significant fallout from the alleged leaks. Approximately 24 lakh students took the NEET UG test on May 5, but allegations of paper leaks and the awarding of grace marks to over 1,500 students have led to protests, court cases, and demands for a thorough investigation.

The results, declared on June 4, have been met with skepticism and concern.
