Mumbai Civic Chief Bhushan Gagrani Discusses Steps to Combat Voter Apathy Ahead of Elections
Mumbai's civic chief, Bhushan Gagrani, has announced measures to tackle urban voter apathy in the upcoming elections. During a press conference, Gagrani, who is also the district election officer, stated that all obstacles hindering voter participation have been addressed. The Election Commission has highlighted urban apathy as a significant concern.

Gagrani expressed optimism about voter turnout, saying, "I think the voting percentage will remain encouraging. We are intensively appealing to voters to come out this time." He noted that nearly 9% of polling booths are located in high-rise buildings and societies, eliminating excuses related to accessibility.
Voter Awareness Initiatives
The BMC and other authorities have launched a comprehensive voter awareness campaign under the Election Commission's SVEEP program. This initiative aims to encourage more people to participate in the electoral process. Efforts are being made to reduce waiting times at polling stations, ensuring a smoother experience for voters.
For the first time in Mumbai, the concept of 'Divyang Mitra' or Friends of the Disabled has been introduced. This initiative aims to assist disabled voters during the election process. Facilities such as drinking water, clean toilets, waiting rooms, and wheelchairs are available at every voting station.
Enhanced Facilities for Voters
Additional amenities include volunteers for disabled voters, fans, dustbins, medical kits, and signboards. A free transport service will be provided for disabled voters, with over 100 vehicles stationed at 1,284 locations across the city. These efforts aim to make voting more accessible and convenient for everyone.
Gagrani emphasized that mobile phones will not be allowed within a 100-meter radius of polling booths, even if they are switched off. This directive comes from the Election Commission to ensure a smooth voting process without distractions or disturbances.
Webcasting and Security Measures
To enhance transparency and security during the elections, every polling booth will have 100% webcasting facilities. This measure ensures that the voting process is monitored effectively. Mumbai's electorate will vote across 36 assembly seats in the upcoming elections.
The comprehensive measures implemented by Mumbai's civic authorities aim to address urban voter apathy and ensure a smooth electoral process. With enhanced facilities and awareness campaigns, officials hope for increased voter participation in the city.
