As the Lok Sabha elections 2024 nears, central government employees are eagerly awaiting the formation of the 8th Pay Commission. The 7th Pay Commission, implemented in 2016, led to substantialsalary hikes, raising expectations for even greater benefits from the 8th Pay Commission.

8th Pay Commission Will It Be Set Up Before Lok Sabha Elections 2024

The 7th Pay Commission was initiated on 25 September 2013 under the UPA-led government. About a year before the election, the government implemented with effect from 1 January 2016.

As the Lok Sabha elections 2024 inch closer, some speculate that the current NDA government might consider instituting the 8th Pay Commission. However, T.V. Somanathan, Secretary of the Finance Department, has dismissed this possibility, and said that there is no immediate plans to establish the eighth Pay Commission for the 5.4 million central government employees and pensioners.

While the proposal for the 7th Pay Commission was introduced in 2013, it was formally constituted in February 2014. The Commission submitted its report on November 19, 2015, and the government accepted it in 2016.

Key Highlights of the 7th Pay Commission:

  • Increased the minimum monthly salary for government employees to Rs 18,000.
  • Specified that the starting salary for a first-grade officer should be at least Rs 56,100.
  • Fixed the maximum monthly salary of government employees at Rs 2.25 lakh, with the salary of Finance Secretary and officers at that level capped at Rs 2.5 lakh.
  • Capped gratuity at Rs 20 lakhs, and it is increased by 1% for every 50% rise in Dearness Allowance (DA) beyond 25%.
  • Established a uniform fitment factor of 2.57% for all employees.
  • Decided to raise the salary by 3% annually, apart from the Dearness Allowance (DA) increment.
  • If the 8th Pay Commission is implemented, possibilities include potential increases in basic salary, revisiting the fitment factor, among other aspects.
