8th Pay Commission Salary Hike: ₹1.8 lakh/month Pay For Consultants; Who Can Apply, Age Criteria

The Eighth Central Pay Commission is looking to hire consultants on contract, both full time and part time. These positions are meant to help the 8th CPC with research and analysis. The work will support recommendations on salaries, allowances and pensions. The engagement is temporary and linked to the Commission’s ongoing exercise for central government employees.

Rules for hiring have been issued through an office memorandum dated April 10, 2026. The memorandum states: "Consultants would be engaged for a fixed period for providing high-end services or for attending to specific and time-bound jobs of the Commission. Consultants would not be engaged for routine day-to-day work. The engagement of consultants shall be on a full-time basis or part-time basis. Full-time consultants shall not be permitted to take up any other assignment during the period of consultancy with the Commission. The engagement of a consultant is of temporary nature and it can be cancelled at any time without assigning any reason."

Selection process for 8th Pay Commission consultants

A committee of senior officers within the 8th CPC will screen the applications. This committee will check eligibility and hold interactions until all positions are filled. As per the memorandum, "The committee reserves the right to reject or select any candidate. The commission will not provide the reasons for rejection at any point. The decision of the selection committee will be final and binding on all candidates and consultants."

The consultant roles will focus on pay and service conditions covered under the Commission’s Terms of Reference. Work will include analysis of salaries, pay structures, pensions and various allowances. Consultants will also review the existing emolument structure. They will help assess how different categories of employees are presently compensated under central government rules.

Duties and data work of 8th Pay Commission consultants

Consultants will collect and examine data from reports, databases and surveys. They will track trends in pay, emoluments and workforce demographics. The work will include legal research related to issues before the Commission. Consultants must liaise with different Ministries and Departments for information. They will also prepare written reports and presentations based on the compiled material.

Some tasks will involve specialised human resource or compensation studies requested by the 8th CPC. Consultants are expected to assist in reviewing gratuity arrangements and bonus mechanisms. They may coordinate targeted studies on particular employee groups. The role is designed to give technical and analytical support. Routine office work will not fall under these assignments.

Categories, eligibility and pay of 8th Pay Commission consultants

The 8th CPC plans to hire across three categories: Senior Consultant, Consultant and Young Professional. Each category has different experience norms, age limits and vacancy numbers. The cut-off date for calculating eligibility is April 1, 2026. Experience must be at least 10 years, 6 years or 4 years, depending on the level.

The experience, age ceiling and number of posts for each category are shown below.

Remuneration will be fixed for the full tenure, with no variable pay component. Different slabs apply for full-time and two part-time options. Payments differ by category and number of working days. The pay structure is detailed in the following table.

Service conditions and termination for 8th Pay Commission consultants

Consultants will not receive additional facilities such as Dearness Allowance or housing. They will also not get residential telephone, transport, foreign travel support or personal staff. Medical reimbursement and CGHS benefits are not included. The Commission will provide only basic working infrastructure. Items like laptops, phones and internet connections will not be supplied under these contracts.

The office memorandum states that the Commission holds complete authority over continuation of these contracts. It notes: "The commission will have powers to terminate any number or all of the consultants at any time without assigning any reason or notice period, with the approval of the Member-Secretary (8 CPC)." This clause applies across all three consultant categories.

Further, the memorandum lists specific situations where services may end immediately. It says the Commission may act if work is delayed or unsatisfactory. Action may also follow if honesty and integrity are in doubt, or if there is indiscipline or misbehaviour. Contracts can also end if any undertaking or document is later found false.

The guidelines show that the 8th CPC wants specialised support while keeping strict controls on engagement. Clear terms cover duties, eligibility, pay and the absence of extra perks. The Commission has also specified wide termination powers. Interested professionals must therefore weigh both the defined work and the firm service conditions.
