8th Pay Commission: Central Government Employees Set For Massive Basic Pay Hike
8th Pay Commission: The upcoming Union Budget 2025 has sparked numerous expectations, particularly regarding the potential establishment of the 8th Pay Commission. Employees have long awaited this move, and during the previous budget, there was significant pressure to address this demand. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is set to present the budget on February 1, and many anticipate actions on tax exemptions and price hikes. The possibility of forming the 8th Pay Commission remains a key focus.
Central Employees' Union's Demand

On December 12, 2024, the Central Employees' Union addressed a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. They urged for the formation of the 8th Pay Commission, citing rising inflation and the declining rupee value as critical factors. The union emphasized that establishing this commission is essential for employees' welfare in these challenging economic times.
Despite persistent demands from employee unions, the central government has consistently declined to form the commission. On December 3, 2024, the Finance Ministry stated in the Rajya Sabha that no proposal for an 8th Pay Commission exists. Neither Prime Minister Narendra Modi nor Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman responded to these appeals.
Potential Benefits of the 8th Pay Commission
If established, the 8th Pay Commission could significantly impact central government employees' salaries. Current information suggests that if recommendations are implemented with a fitment factor of 2.86, basic pay could rise from Rs 18,000 to Rs 51,480. This would represent an increase of approximately 186%, offering substantial financial relief to employees.
Nirmala Sitharaman had previously advocated for forming this commission during a meeting with trade unions on January 6. As budget preparations continue, there is hope that this time the Modi government will heed employees' requests and establish the commission.
Government employees eagerly await potential good news in this year's budget announcement. The formation of the commission could bring about significant changes in salary structures and provide much-needed financial support amidst ongoing economic challenges.
The anticipation surrounding the Union Budget reflects broader concerns about inflation and currency devaluation affecting employees nationwide. Addressing these issues through measures like forming a pay commission could offer substantial relief and stability for many workers across India.
