Jammu and Kashmir Records 59 Percent Voter Turnout in First Phase of Assembly Polls
A voter turnout of approximately 59 percent was recorded in the first phase of assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, marking the highest participation in the last seven elections. Chief Electoral Officer P K Pole mentioned that these figures are provisional and might increase after final reports, including postal ballots and data from remote areas like Marwah and Wadwan, are received.

Polling took place across 24 seats in seven districts, concluding peacefully without major incidents. Minor scuffles were reported at a few polling stations, but nothing serious enough to warrant a repoll. Over 2.3 million voters were eligible to decide the fate of 219 candidates, including 90 independents. The increased turnout is attributed to improved security, active political participation, and a campaign by the electoral department.
District-wise Voter Turnout
Kishtwar district recorded the highest turnout at 77 percent, while Pulwama saw the lowest at 46 percent. Other districts reported varying participation: Doda had 69.33 percent, Ramban 67.71 percent, Kulgam 61.57 percent, Anantnag 54.17 percent, and Shopian 53.64 percent. In comparison to the 2014 assembly elections, most districts showed an increase in voter turnout.
In Kishtwar's Padder-Nagseni segment, voting reached 80.67 percent, followed by Inderwal at 80.06 percent and Kishtwar at 78.11 percent. Doda district's Doda West segment saw a turnout of 75.98 percent, with Doda itself at 70.21 percent and Bhaderwah at 65.27 percent.
Polling Details in Other Districts
In Ramban district, Banihal recorded a turnout of 71.28 percent and Ramban itself had 67.34 percent participation. Anantnag district's Pahalgam constituency had the highest turnout at 67.86 percent, while Anantnag recorded the lowest at 41.58 percent.
Pulwama district's Pulwama segment saw a voter turnout of 50.42 percent, with Rajpora at 48.07 percent and Pampore at 44.74 percent. In Shopian district, Shopian segment recorded a turnout of 54.72 percent and Zainapora had 52.64 percent.
Participation Among Migrant Voters
The election commission noted that voter participation exceeded that of the Lok Sabha elections held earlier this year in each of the seven districts involved in this phase. The polling was conducted across 3,276 stations with additional stations for migrant Pandits in Jammu, Udhampur, and Delhi.
Among Kashmiri migrant voters, about 31.42 percent of over 35,000 eligible voters participated: 27 percent voted in Jammu's polling stations, while Delhi saw a higher turnout of 40 percent and Udhampur had a turnout of 30 percent.
The election commission expressed satisfaction with the high voter turnout and long queues observed at polling stations across Jammu and Kashmir. This reflects the people's trust in the democratic process despite past challenges in voter participation within these regions.
Voting commenced at 7 am and continued smoothly throughout the day with security forces ensuring peace across polling locations. The day remained largely incident-free except for minor clashes between political workers reported in Bijbehara and D H Pora areas.
A video surfaced on social media showing a policeman losing his temper outside a polling station in Kishtwar but was quickly resolved by authorities on site. Pole expressed optimism for high voter participation in the upcoming phases scheduled for September 25 and October 1 as well.
The trend seen during these assembly polls builds upon the pattern observed during recent Lok Sabha elections where Jammu and Kashmir witnessed its highest voter turnout in over three decades at polling stations with a rate of nearly 58.58 percent.
