59 lakh men are forced bachelors in UP, see why?
Lucknow, April 24: Akshaya Tritiya, an auspicious day for marriage, brought out a jarring reality in Uttar Pradesh. Considering the spike in female foeticide in the state, the sex ratio has gone abnormally down, forcing 59 lakh men into forced bachelorhood.
According to a census data on marital status of Indian population, 79.56 lakh bachelors in their 20s, just have 29.26 lakh unmarried women. Parallely, for 9.13 lakh men in their 30s, there are only 1.95 lakh girls. Moreover, 3.03 lakh men in their 40s have just 59,399 women to choose from.
Dr Neelam Singh, member, national inspection and monitoring committee on PCPNDT (pre-conception, pre-natal diagnostic techniques) Act said,"This had to happen as girls were killed mercilessly inside the womb in those decades." She further added,"That was the time sex determination strengthened its roots in India and created ripples in western parts of UP. The scenario will worsen by 2021."
Contrastingly, there has been an increase in the number of cases where men and their families have stopped demanding dowry. Socialists believe that increase in the number of acid attacks and honour killings are also behind the sipping sex ratio.
