550 IndiGo Flights Cancelled in a Single Day, Marking a 20-Year Low for India’s Largest Airline

Indigo faced widespread flight cancellations and delays across major hubs, triggering a formal review by India's civil aviation ministry and the DGCA. The airline cited crew shortages and technology issues, with scheduling adjustments and a gradual path to restore punctuality as operations stabilise.

IndiGo’s network faced heavy disruption on Thursday as more than 550 domestic and international flights were cancelled and many others ran late, extending operational problems into a third straight day and forcing hundreds of passengers across India and overseas to deal with missed connections and sudden changes to their travel plans.

The airline usually ran about 2,300 flights each day and often highlighted punctuality, yet its on-time performance collapsed to 19.7 percent on Wednesday, after already dropping to 35 percent on Tuesday, signalling a sharp decline in reliability for passengers and raising questions about planning and resilience within IndiGo’s operations.

IndiGo flight cancellations and government review of disruptions

The scale of IndiGo flight cancellations and delays prompted the civil aviation ministry and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation to call senior IndiGo management for a review meeting on Thursday, where officials examined the disruption data, questioned the airline about causes, and evaluated its proposed steps to stabilise flights over the coming days.

During this period of disruption, IndiGo’s CEO Pieter Elbers addressed employees and acknowledged the seriousness of the situation, stressing that restoring schedules would demand sustained effort and stating that bringing operations back on track and improving punctuality would not be an "easy target", signalling to staff that recovery could take time.

IndiGo flight cancellations, causes and changing schedules

According to airline insiders, IndiGo was handling several operational challenges at once, including cabin crew availability issues and technology-related problems, and had therefore reworked its schedules so that a portion of cancellations became pre-planned adjustments, presented internally as a method to gradually stabilise the network and reduce last-minute disruptions for passengers.

The DGCA noted a clear pattern behind the disruptions, stating in an official communication that "IndiGo has been experiencing a sharp rise in cancellations, reaching approximately 170-200 flights per day, which is substantially higher than normal," indicating that the regulator was closely tracking cancellation trends against earlier baselines for the airline.

Data shared by sources showed how IndiGo flight cancellations were spread across major hubs and other cities on Thursday, with Delhi suffering the most with 172 cancellations, followed by Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Chennai and Goa, while further cancellations were also reported from additional airports in the network.
