28-year-old British-Indian sells food to fund school in India

London, Jul 31: A 28-year-old Indian-origin woman in the UK is selling Indian street food here to raise 20,000 pounds for a girls' school in India.

UK-born Tanya Gohil has set-up a stall called Devi's at Maltby Street market here just three weeks ago which is frequented by many food lovers, London Evening Standard reported.

The profits earned from the food stall will help fund a school in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, it quoted Gohil as saying.

She aims to raise up to 20,000 pounds (over RS 20 lakh) through crowd-funding to buy land in Jaisalmer.

Gohil, who studied economics and development at Manchester University, has been to India twice.

The first visit was to help a girls' education organisation and the second for road- testing recipes.

She sells "classic Indian street food with a contemporary British twist" including Mmmmumbai Grill - her take on a grilled club sandwich. Gohil stresses that she is not a chef but "a home cook".

"I have no training whatsoever. It is just being surrounded by my family, watching what they do. In Indian culture, women are encouraged to cook, because who will want to marry you if you can not?," she said.

Gohil is hopeful that her efforts will help bring about real change in India.
