India is set to achieve a major milestone in its high-speed rail development as the first 200-meter-long steel bridge for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project is scheduled for launch in March 2025 near Nadiad, Gujarat. This initiative, part of the ambitious 'Make in India' program, marks a significant step forward in the construction of the nation's first bullet train corridor.

Managed by the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), the MAHSR project is poised to revolutionize rail travel in India. A crucial element of this undertaking is the steel bridge spanning National Highway 48, a critical roadway connecting major urban centers, including Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai.

Key Specifications of the Steel Bridge

The bridge comprises two spans, each measuring 100 meters in length. With a width of 14.3 meters and a height of 14.6 meters, the structure weighs approximately 1,500 metric tons. It has been meticulously manufactured at the Salasar Workshop near Hapur, Uttar Pradesh, employing Tension Control High-Strength Bolts (TTHSB) to ensure exceptional durability.

In a groundbreaking approach, the bridge is coated with the C-5 System Painting, a first-of-its-kind application in India. This protective layer enhances resistance against environmental degradation, ensuring a lifespan of 100 years-a testament to India's growing prowess in infrastructure development.

The Role of Steel Bridges in High-Speed Rail

Steel bridges offer distinct advantages in high-speed rail construction, particularly for crossings over highways and railway lines. Their strength and flexibility make them an ideal choice, while pre-stressed concrete bridges are better suited for river crossings and standard tracks.

India has extensive experience in using steel bridges for freight and semi-high-speed trains operating at speeds of 100-160 km/h. Now, this expertise is being leveraged for the MAHSR corridor, which will support speeds of up to 320 km/h, ensuring both safety and efficiency in diverse terrains.

Expanding the Network: 28 Steel Bridges in the MAHSR Corridor

A total of 28 steel bridges are planned along the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train route, with 11 in Maharashtra and 17 in Gujarat. Six steel bridges have already been successfully completed in Gujarat, spanning railway tracks and industrial zones such as Bhilosa.

The first span of the Nadiad steel bridge is set for launch in March 2025, with full completion anticipated by August 2025. This progress reaffirms India's commitment to expanding its rail infrastructure under the 'Make in India' initiative.
