Rush Hour-Proof: The Tech Behind Apps That Stay Live When Millions Tap 'Buy Now'
Anyone who has tried to buy limited-edition sneakers or a piece of trending furniture during an online sale knows the drill-apps crash, checkouts freeze, and items disappear from carts in seconds. What most people don't see is the complex work that goes into keeping those apps running smoothly when thousands-or even millions-are all tapping "buy now" at the same time.
At the heart of this effort is Varun Reddy, a Tech Lead at Foot Locker Inc., who has helped build and scale some of the company's busiest mobile applications. These include Foot Locker's main U.S. app, as well as Champs Sports, Kids Foot Locker, and versions of the apps for customers in Canada and Europe.

Reddy rightly pointed out that product launches and flash sales create short bursts of very high traffic. The traffic is far more than what most apps see day-to-day. During those moments, speed and reliability are everything. A glitchy checkout can lead to lost sales and unhappy customers. To prevent that, his team developed smarter systems behind the scenes. They built queuing features and caching tools that keep the app stable, even when demand surges. They also improved how quickly screens load and how the app manages user sessions, making the experience smoother all around.
These initiatives have paid off. According to internal data, the app now sees fewer checkout failures-down by 20-30% during high-demand drops. That reliability translates directly to revenue, with the company able to retain 15-20% more sales during major events than it might have previously.
Augmented Reality in Furniture Shopping
Beyond sneaker drops, the tech lead also worked on a separate challenge, that is helping users make better shopping decisions for home furniture. For an android app for furniture, he created an augmented reality (AR) feature that lets users see how a piece of furniture would look in their space before buying it. Reddy noted, "Built fallback pathways and resolution-aware 3D handling that maintained usability even on lower-end devices - a gap not previously addressed effectively." This feature became especially popular during promotional events. It greatly boosted engagement, and drove a clear rise in conversions when the AR option was used. When the feature was briefly paused, conversion rates dipped-highlighting its real business value.
According to the professional, the focus was not only on building one app that works well. The same high standards had to be met across different countries, languages, and backend systems. The team created a flexible architecture that could support the different needs of users in the U.S., Canada, and Europe, without duplicating work or sacrificing speed. Furthermore, to keep things running smoothly, they also strengthened pre-launch testing and cut down on issues after updates-meaning fewer hotfixes and fewer customer complaints.
No matter the success stories, Reddy came across several challenges along the way. One of the biggest ones was simply the size of the crowds hitting the apps all at once during launches. In those moments, even a small delay can lead to thousands of failed orders. By building smarter systems to manage how requests hit the backend and how users move through the app, he alongside his team helped prevent crashes and protect the shopping experience.
Looking ahead, he advocates for a future where retail apps are even more responsive-learning from real-time usage and adjusting automatically. He also believes that AR is just getting started, with more advanced, personalized features on the way. He further shared, "One key insight is that proactive caching, event debouncing, and coroutine-based concurrency are now essential tools in maintaining app stability during rush-hour traffic spikes, such as sneaker drops or flash sales."
At the end, for shoppers, a smooth app experience might seem like natural but behind the scenes, it's the result of thoughtful engineering, careful testing, and constant tweaking. As more people shop online and expect fast, glitch-free service, the pressure on apps and their developers will only grow. It can be learnt from the above experience that performance isn't just a technical detail, rather a key part of the shopping experience. And getting it right can make all the difference when the clock is ticking, and the drop is live.
