Rajaganapathi, thanks for joining. When people ask what you do at your current role, how do you explain it without going into technical detail?
I usually start by saying that my job is to make sure the company can trust its numbers and get to them fast enough to act. At a simple level, that means I design and build the systems that bring data from different parts of the business into one consistent place, then shape that data so finance teams, supply chain leaders, and other stakeholders can use it without needing to think about the underlying complexity. If a business partner asks for a view across years of history, different regions, or multiple product lines, they should feel like they are opening a clean window, not fighting their way through raw tables.
Behind that explanation there is a lot of architectural work. You have worked with SAP HANA for many years. What was the big problem you were trying to solve with the EDW to HANA migration at your current company?
The legacy enterprise data warehouse served the company for a long time, but it was not designed for the level of real time reporting that the business expects now. Reports could take hours to run, which meant that by the time a finance or operations team saw the numbers, the context had already moved on. On top of that, years of accumulated business logic in the old environment made it harder and harder to maintain consistency. Different teams sometimes saw slightly different answers because the transformations had evolved in parallel.
The EDW to HANA migration was about resetting that foundation. We wanted a platform where critical reporting could shift from batch to near real time and where logic was clearly defined in one place. On the technical side, that meant moving from row based structures to column oriented, in memory models, and pushing as much processing as possible into HANA itself. On the business side, it meant treating the migration as an opportunity to clean up definitions, remove redundant objects, and give users a more reliable view of the metrics they use every day to run the company.
You were the first and only HANA developer at the company during that project. What did that look like in practice, and how did you keep it on track over eighteen months?
Being the first HANA developer meant that I had to build both the solution and the playbook at the same time. There was no existing set of standards or examples to follow, so the first step was to understand the existing EDW logic in detail. I would take a group of legacy transformations, map their behavior, and then design equivalent HANA Calculation Views, SQLScript procedures, and table functions that could perform the same work more efficiently. That process repeated in sprint style cycles where each month focused on a fresh set of objects and their related reports.
At the same time, I defined coding standards, performance guidelines, and reusable patterns so that future projects would not need to reinvent those decisions. I worked with architects to size the system for growth, and I stayed close to business stakeholders to confirm that we were not just copying old behavior but improving it where possible. The result was a platform that reduced reporting latency from hours to seconds for key use cases and gave us a cleaner base for future real time and advanced analytics.
The migration clearly involved a lot of methodology and discipline. What kinds of challenges did you face when moving from a traditional warehouse to an in memory platform like HANA?
One of the biggest challenges was unlearning habits that made sense in the old world but did not take advantage of HANA. In a traditional warehouse, you might accept certain multi table joins or batch processes because the hardware and design encourage that style. In an in memory system, you want to push logic down into the database, use window functions efficiently, and design models that reflect how queries will hit the data at scale. Making that shift required careful analysis of each transformation so that it did not become a simple copy from one environment to another.
There was also the challenge of continuity. We were migrating systems that supported daily operations across multiple departments, so we could not afford long outages or sudden changes in behavior. That meant detailed cutover plans, fallback options, and extensive testing in each cycle. On top of the technical work, I had to manage expectations about timelines and explain why certain complexities required more time. The upside of that investment is that users now experience the system as stable and fast, rather than as a risky experiment.
How did you bring the rest of the organization along, especially when you were the pioneer for HANA inside the company?
Education and communication were as important as the code. I spent a significant amount of time mentoring other developers on HANA specific concepts, from basic modeling principles to performance tuning techniques. We held sessions to walk through real examples of how a particular report ran before and after the migration, which helped people see the benefits in concrete terms. Those conversations made it easier to socialize new standards and avoid a situation where everyone tried to solve the same problem in different ways.
With business stakeholders, I focused on showing how the new system would change their day to day work. When users see that a report that used to run for an hour now finishes in a few minutes, and that they can adjust parameters without worrying about timeouts, they become strong advocates. That user experience improvement is often more powerful than any slide deck. Over time, the combination of technical coaching and visible wins helped the organization treat HANA as the default platform for serious reporting rather than a side project.
Your experience spans not just HANA but also Snowflake, DBT, and a range of integration tools. How do you decide which technology should own which part of the architecture?
I start with the problem and the constraints rather than the tools. For workloads that need immediate response and tight integration with operational systems, HANA is still a strong choice because of its in memory processing and real time capabilities. For scenarios that involve large volumes of historical data, flexible domain boundaries, and collaboration across many teams, cloud platforms like Snowflake with data lake and data mesh patterns make more sense. The key is to be honest about what each system does well and how they can complement each other. The cloud data warehouse market is expected to grow from $11.78 billion in 2025 to $39.91 billion by 2030, which reflects how many teams are shifting heavy analytic workloads into elastic environments where those choices really matter.
Once that high level division is clear, I map the rest of the stack around it. Tools like DBT are useful where modular, version controlled transformations are needed in a warehouse environment. Orchestration platforms such as Control M help when you want consistent scheduling and monitoring of complex workflows. ETL tools like BODS and SnapLogic are chosen based on connectivity, latency needs, and operational overhead. My role as a Globee Awards judge for Impact reinforces that habit of evaluating solutions through both technical and commercial lenses, because I spend time reviewing how other leaders connect architecture to measurable outcomes. Certifications such as my SnowPro Advanced Data Engineer credential reflect that I take these choices seriously and stay close to how each platform is evolving, but the decisions always start from business goals and data behavior, not from the logo on a tool.
In your current work, you also think a lot about cost and governance, especially in cloud environments with Snowflake and similar platforms. How do you balance performance, spend, and control?
Cost, performance, and governance are tightly linked. If you design a system that is fast but ignores compute usage patterns, you may surprise the organization with bills that are hard to explain. If you lock everything down in the name of control, you slow teams to the point where they start building their own unofficial solutions. My approach is to design with measurement in mind, so that we can see which workloads drive consumption and which access patterns are healthy.
For example, when I think about data mesh on Snowflake, I look at domain boundaries, storage tiers, and query behavior as one picture. Hot data that needs frequent access should be modeled and indexed with that in mind. Less active data can move to cheaper tiers or external stages with clear rules. Reporting tools such as Tableau or Power BI are configured to respect caching and refresh policies that avoid unnecessary queries. Governance then becomes about setting standards that teams can follow without slowing them down, using data contracts, lineage, and monitoring to keep the platform predictable for both finance and engineering.
Looking back at the EDW to HANA migration, what kind of impact did it have on everyday users inside your current company?
The change was very visible for users who depended on reports to run their day. Before the migration, many people planned their work around long running jobs and rigid reporting windows. After the move to HANA, critical reports that once took hours to complete began finishing in minutes, and self service capabilities meant that users no longer had to open tickets for every new question. That shift alone saved some users two to three hours each day, time that could be redirected from chasing data to acting on it.
From an operational standpoint, we also saw a sharp reduction in manual interventions. Automated ETL procedures and streamlined data processing cut manual effort by around seventy percent, which lowered the risk of errors and unplanned downtime. For the company, that translated into faster decision cycles and more confidence in the numbers. The importance of the project was recognized at leadership level, and I received a Spot Bonus in recognition of this work.
For architects who are just beginning a similar journey, what lessons from your experience would you emphasize first?
The first lesson is to treat architecture as a long term commitment, not a one time upgrade. When you migrate to HANA or any new platform, you are setting patterns that will influence every future project. It is worth spending extra time to define standards, document logic, and build reusable components instead of taking shortcuts that will need to be revisited later. Your future self and your colleagues will feel the difference between a rushed transition and a thoughtful one. The real time analytics market is estimated to grow from $27.6 billion in 2024 to $147.5 billion by 2031, which means expectations for timely, trustworthy insight will only rise.
The second lesson is to stay close to the people who use the system every day. Their feedback is the best source of requirements and the most honest indicator of whether your design works in practice. If they tell you that a particular report still feels slow or confusing, it is a signal to look again at the model, the queries, or the way data is presented. Over time, that loop between architecture and user experience is what turns a technical platform into a strategic asset.
