When Is Ugadi 2024? Is It On April 8 Or 9? Check Hindu Festival Date

Ugadi or Yugadi is a festival that marks the the commencement of a new year in the Hindu lunar calendar and it is celebrated in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Goa in India.

The first day of each year is known as Ugadi. The term Ugadi is derived from Sanskrit words Uga,' which signifies the course of stars, and 'Adi,' meaning 'beginning'. Celebrated with festivity, it marks the onset of the Hindu lunisolar calendar month of Chaitra, typically falling in late March or early April according to the Gregorian calendar.

The Hindu calendar has a cycle of 60 years, with each year having its unique name. In Tamil Nadu, it coincides with either the Panguni or Chithrai month, often following Amavasya with the 27th Nakshatra, Revati. Ugadi is anchored on the first New Moon succeeding the March Equinox.

When it will be celebrated, this year?

This year, the festival falls on April 9. According to Vedic astrology, Ugadi holds great significance. Falling under the Sadhe Teen Muhurat, it is considered auspicious alongside Akshaya Tritiya, Vijayadashami, and half of Bali Pratipada. These days are believed to be inherently auspicious, requiring no specific Muhurta for any activity. It is believed that any new endeavours undertaken on these days yield positive outcomes.

The day starts with a traditional oil bath, followed by prayers. According to the scriptures, both the oil bath and consuming Neem leaves are essential rituals.
