Telangana Transport Department Revenue Falls 17% In FY 2024–25
By the end of January, the Telangana Transport Department's revenue for the 2024-25 fiscal year had dropped significantly to ₹5,787 crore. There is a ₹1,203 crore shortfall as a result of the 17 percent decline from the ₹6,990 crore earned in the prior fiscal year.
This is the department's second significant drop in revenue since the fiscal year 2020-21, when the Covid-19 pandemic caused earnings to plummet. The department received ₹3,228 crore that year, a nearly 20 percent decrease from ₹3,515 crore the year before. Prior to the most recent decline, revenue increased in the following years, reaching ₹3,971 crore in 2021-2022 and ₹6,390 crore in 2022-2023.

Vehicle registration, transport permit issuance, traffic fine collection, and green tax revenue are some of the ways the department makes money. The Telangana Transport Department currently has 1.72 crore registered vehicles. With 1.26 crore registrations, motorcycles make up the largest group among these, followed by motor cars with 23.35 lakh and goods carriers with 6.53 lakh.
Officials blamed a number of economic factors for the recent decline in revenue. According to reports, a slowdown in the real estate industry and job losses brought on by inflation have decreased demand for car purchases, which has a direct impact on the department's main revenue streams.
Authorities voiced cautious optimism that, if the economy stabilizes and car sales improve, the department's earnings could increase in the upcoming fiscal year, despite the current deficit.
