Telangana Reports Record Dengue And Chikungunya Cases In 2024 Amid Seasonal Disease Surge

In 2024, Telangana saw an unheard-of increase in seasonal illnesses, making it the worst year for outbreaks in the state's recent history. The state recorded a record 13,592 suspected cases of chikungunya and 10,077 confirmed cases of dengue, which are unprecedented numbers, according to data from the Director General of Health Services (DGHS), Ministry of Health, Medical, and Family Welfare.

The increase in probable cases of chikungunya is especially concerning because dengue has usually taken center stage in the area. Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne illness that causes extreme joint pain and exhaustion. From June to December, when the monsoon and post-monsoon seasons occur, dengue has historically been the most common seasonal infection. However, the 6,608 suspected cases of chikungunya reported in 2022 have been surpassed, marking the first time Telangana has had such a dramatic increase in suspected cases. By contrast, only 761 cases were documented in 2023.

Telangana Reports Record Dengue and Chikungunya Cases in 2024 Amid Seasonal Disease Surge

This spike has alarmed Hyderabadi health specialists, who have described it as a significant public health issue that should influence future policy. Both public and commercial hospitals found it difficult to manage the surge of cases, according to a leading seasonal disease expert. Hospitals were undoubtedly under pressure the previous year. Despite having comparable treatment protocols, dengue and chikungunya placed a tremendous strain on the healthcare system. Going forward, public awareness and preventive measures are essential," the expert, who spoke on condition of anonymity, stated.

With 10,077 confirmed cases in 2024, Telangana is second only to Karnataka in South India for dengue cases. Dengue cases in the state have varied over time, according to historical data, with 8,016 cases in 2023 and 8,972 in 2022. The 2024 numbers, however, support a concerning rising trend.

Telangana's chikungunya statistics continue to be noteworthy in the larger South Indian setting. In 2024, there were 77,592 suspected cases in Karnataka, Telangana, Tamil Nadu (3,091), and Kerala (889 reports). The growing number of cases in several states emphasizes how urgently better vector management, surveillance, and public health readiness are needed.
