Telangana May Ban Film 'Emergency' Amid Sikh Community Outrage

Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has assured that his government will consider banning the film Emergency, starring BJP MP Kangana Ranaut, following concerns raised by Sikh community leaders. The officials confirmed this development on Thursday.

An 18-member delegation from the Telangana Sikh Society, led by former IPS officer Tejdeep Kaur Menon, met Adviser to the Telangana Government (SC, ST, OBC & Minorities) Mohammed Ali Shabbir at the Secretariat in Hyderabad. They expressed their deep concerns over the film's portrayal of the Sikh community.

Concerns Over Film's Portrayal

The delegation alleged that the film depicts Sikhs as terrorists and anti-nationals, which they found offensive and damaging to the community's image. The Sikh community constitutes 2 per cent of Telangana's population.

Shabbir stated, "The delegation highlighted that nearly 12 per cent of the nation's military forces comprise Sikhs, many of whom have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty to protect the country. They conveyed the anger, especially among the Sikh youth, over the film's promotional material."

Film Emergency Under Scrutiny

The film Emergency, directed and produced by Kangana Ranaut, is scheduled for release in early September. According to former IPS officer Tejdeep Kaur Menon, pre-release trailers show the Sikh community in a disparaging manner. "This is highly objectionable," she said.

Shabbir then formally requested CM Revanth Reddy to consider banning the film in Telangana. He emphasised that the film's content is offensive to the Sikh community and could potentially lead to unrest.

After meeting with Shabbir and hearing these concerns, CM Revanth Reddy assured that he would take a decision on whether to ban the film after seeking legal advice.

This issue highlights ongoing sensitivities around media portrayals of minority communities in India. The response from Telangana’s government will be closely watched as it may set a precedent for how similar issues are handled in future.
