But the most shocking and unhygienic thing that officers noticed were cockroaches in the kitchen's storage area, showcasing the poor hygiene standards of the restaurant.

The reports said that FSSAI officers slapped hefty fines on all three food joints and issued stringent warnings to all the establishments, along with follow-up inspection warnings.

Later, the Makau restaurant issued clarification stating as a popular restaurant they don't use expired items for cooking at all.

"Every week we remove all the expired items so this week we are supposed to remove expired items worth Rs 4970. We removed the items immediately this was somehow missed this week. Moreover, all the expired items are returned every 6 months to the manufacturer for a replacement and a few items, which are not taken back, are disposed of," the statement said.

"The expired items that were found in our store are not at all used for cooking. We never use expired items for our food preparation and we follow all the standards required," Makau said.
