Telangana, Andhra Reel Under Heavy Rainfall; Flooding Disrupts Train Services

Heavy rains have wreaked havoc across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, leading to severe flooding, landslides, and the disruption of daily life.

The relentless downpour, triggered by a depression in the Bay of Bengal, has submerged several low-lying areas, making roads impassable and cutting off connectivity in numerous regions.

Telangana AP Reel Under Heavy Rainfall

The situation is particularly dire as both states brace for more rainfall in the coming days, reported India Today.

Andhra Pradesh: Flooding, Landslides, and Casualties

Andhra Pradesh has been severely impacted, with widespread flooding and landslides causing significant damage. At least eight people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents across the state.

The worst of these tragedies occurred in Mogalrajapuram, Vijayawada, where five people died after large boulders dislodged by heavy rain crashed into two houses.

In another incident in Guntur district, a teacher and two students were swept away while crossing an overflowing stream in a car.

The most affected areas include Vijayawada, Machilipatnam, Gudivada, Kaikaluru, Narasapuram, Amaravati, Mangalagiri, Nandigama, and Bhimavaram.

In response to the devastation, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu canceled all his scheduled programs to focus on the emergency. He has been actively monitoring the situation and has directed officials to release Rs 3 crore to each district for immediate relief efforts.

Over 80 people have been rescued from various locations, as national and state disaster relief forces, along with the police, continue to conduct operations.

Disruption of Train Services

The heavy rainfall has also severely affected train services in Andhra Pradesh. The Vijayawada-Warangal route has been particularly impacted, with a local stream overflowing and submerging the track near Vijayawada, leading to the suspension of train movements on the Vijayawada-Khammam route.

Another stream caused disruptions at Tandalapusalapalli near Mahabubabad railway station, halting services on the Warangal-Khammam route. Additionally, rainwater over the tracks near Kesamudram railway station has forced authorities to stop trains at nearby stations.

Government Response and Public Safety Measures

The Andhra Pradesh government has taken several steps to manage the crisis. A state-level control room has been established to coordinate rescue efforts and respond to public SOS calls.

The control room, working in conjunction with disaster management agencies and the health department, has been set up to ensure that emergency services are effectively delivered.

Citizens in need of medical assistance can contact the control room at +919032384168.

A dedicated team, led by Dr. Subrahmanyeswari and Dr MV Padmaja, is monitoring emergency medical services around the clock.

The Central Water Commission (CWC) has issued a warning that most rivers in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are expected to swell over the next two days, further exacerbating the flood risk.

Telangana: Flooding and Emergency Preparations

Telangana is also facing severe weather, with heavy rainfall continuing to batter many parts of the state. The incessant rain has led to the inundation of low-lying areas and major disruption of transportation.

Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has instructed all government departments to remain on high alert and to take preventive measures to avoid further casualties.

He also directed that residents of vulnerable areas be relocated to relief camps immediately and that control rooms be opened in every district collector's office, as well as in Hyderabad.

The state's Chief Secretary emphasised the need for an advance evacuation plan for flood-affected areas and the swift establishment of relief camps.

In one notable instance, Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka conducted a midnight inspection of the Madhira area to oversee ongoing relief operations.

The downpour has particularly affected districts such as Mahabubabad, Narayanpet, and Khammam.

The India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in several districts, including Adilabad, Nizamabad, Kamareddy, Mahabubnagar, Narayanpet, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Jagital, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, and Warangal.

In preparation for continued adverse weather, teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been stationed in Hyderabad and Vijayawada to assist with rescue and relief operations.

Ongoing Weather Impact

According to the latest updates from the India Meteorological Department, the depression that caused the severe weather crossed the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coast near Kalingapatnam early on September 1.

The depression is expected to continue moving northwestwards across north Andhra Pradesh, south Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Telangana over the next 24 hours, bringing more rain and potential flooding to these areas.

As Andhra Pradesh and Telangana brace for more rainfall, the state governments, along with disaster management agencies, are working tirelessly to mitigate the impact of the floods and provide relief to those affected.

The situation remains critical, and residents are advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions as the states navigate this challenging period.
