However, the Congress is yet to formally announce the name of the next Chief Minister of the state.

Earlier, the newly-elected Telangana Congress MLAs met at its office to elect their Legislature Party Leader. It was held in the presence of senior leaders and AICC observers.

After clinching 64 seats in the 119-seat assembly, a delegation of Congress leaders on Sunday met Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan and staked claim to form the government in the state.

Reddy won from the Kodangal constituency with a margin of over 32,000 votes defeating his nearest BRS rival Patnam Narender Reddy.

However, he lost in Kamareddy against BJP's K Venkata Ramana Reddy with a margin of 6,741. It has to be noted that outgoing CM KCR was also in the race and he ended up in third place in this constituency.

The near 10 year-old rule of the Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) came to an end on Sunday, even as Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao tendered his resignation from his post, which was accepted by Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan. Rao was asked to continue in office till the formation of the new government.

Talking to reporters after the CLP meeting on Monday, DK Shivakumar said that the ball is in the high command's court and the central leadership will choose the CM.

Shivakumar said, "Today we had a meeting of the Congress Legislature Party of the newly elected members of the party. We thank the people of the state for allowing us to form our govt here...All the members of the newly elected Congress party unanimously resolved to authorise Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge to appoint the Congress legislature party leader. All have decided that whatever the high command decides, we will go by that..."

Revanth Reddy will be the second CM of the state after Telangana was carved out of Andhra Pradesh in 2014.
