Rain and Strong Winds Disrupt Power Supply in Hyderabad, Over 20 Colonies Face Long Outages
A brief spell of rain in Hyderabad on Sunday triggered prolonged power outages across several parts of the city, raising fresh questions over the electricity network's readiness ahead of the upcoming monsoon season.

Despite repeated maintenance works and crores reportedly being spent to strengthen supply systems, the sudden weather disturbance exposed visible infrastructure gaps, leaving both residents and electricity department officials struggling with hours-long disruptions.
Strong winds and rain damage poles, disrupt supply in key divisions
Power supply was badly hit in multiple areas falling under the Kukatpally, Kondapur, Gachibowli and Boinpally divisions of the Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TSSPDCL). The disruption began after strong winds accompanied rainfall at around 5 pm on Sunday.
The weather impact was significant enough to bring down nearly 10 electricity poles, including four to five control units, according to the reported assessment. Although only a small number of trees were uprooted, several branches became entangled in overhead power lines, worsening the disruption and delaying restoration efforts.
Officials also faced an added challenge because the issue was spread across several localities instead of being limited to one pocket, making repair and restoration work more difficult.
More than 20 colonies face five to six hours of outages
The outages stretched for five to six hours in many areas, causing widespread inconvenience for residents in more than 20 colonies and settlements. Supply that went off around 5 pm was restored only after 10 pm in several neighbourhoods.
Among the affected localities were Kukatpally village, Venkatravu Nagar, Seshadri Nagar, Devi Nagar, Ramayya Nagar, Mythri Nagar, Vivekananda Nagar Colony, AS Raju Nagar, Allwyn Colony, KPHB Colony, Balaji Nagar, Balanagar, Fatehnagar, Old Boinpally and Hasmathpet.
In some places, the problems did not end with restoration. Residents of Mythri Nagar reportedly continued to experience low-voltage supply till Monday morning, extending the inconvenience beyond the initial outage period.
Residents question preparedness before five-month monsoon season
The disruption has sparked concern among consumers over how the city's power system will cope once the full monsoon begins in June. Residents pointed out that if one short spell of rain and brief winds could trigger such widespread outages, the situation may become more severe during the five-month rainy season.
The incident has led many consumers to urge TSSPDCL officials to view the episode as an early warning rather than an isolated breakdown. With only about one-and-a-half months left before the monsoon sets in, residents are pressing for immediate corrective action on the ground.
Calls grow for urgent infrastructure strengthening and accountability
In recent months, TSSPDCL officials have been visiting colonies under the 'Basti Bata' programme, but the latest disruptions have prompted residents to demand stronger accountability from the department. Many are now questioning whether recent field visits and maintenance efforts have translated into actual system resilience.
As concerns mount, residents are demanding urgent steps to reinforce electricity infrastructure, improve response mechanisms and ensure uninterrupted supply before the monsoon begins. The latest rain spell, though brief, has already become a reminder that the city's power network may still be vulnerable when seasonal weather intensifies.
