Hyderabad-Vijayawada Highway Upgrade: 8-Lane Double-Decker Corridor With Metro Planned At Rs 941 Crore

Hyderabad is set for a major road infrastructure boost with the announcement of a double-decker elevated corridor on one of the city's busiest traffic stretches. The proposed project, aimed at easing congestion between LB Nagar and Hayathnagar on the Hyderabad-Vijayawada National Highway, is expected to significantly improve daily travel for commuters heading towards the eastern part of the city.

Hyderabad plans a Rs 941 crore, 5.5 km double-decker elevated corridor between LB Nagar and Hayathnagar, featuring a three-level design for highway traffic, metro rail, and service roads to significantly reduce congestion on the Hyderabad-Vijayawada National Highway.

Roads and Buildings Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy shared the details in the Assembly while replying to questions related to road infrastructure, outlining a multi-level transport corridor designed to decongest a key urban bottleneck and strengthen connectivity towards Vijayawada.

5.5 km double-decker corridor planned between LB Nagar and Hayathnagar

The proposed elevated corridor will cover a distance of 5.5 km between LB Nagar and Hayathnagar and will feature an eight-lane road. The total estimated cost of the project is around Rs 941 crore.

Once completed, the corridor is expected to reduce heavy traffic congestion on this busy section of the Hyderabad-Vijayawada National Highway. It is also likely to bring down travel time for commuters moving between Hyderabad and Vijayawada, especially during peak hours.

The corridor has been designed as a three-level structure to optimise urban space and support multiple transport modes on the same stretch.

Three-level design to combine service roads, highway traffic and metro rail

According to the proposed plan, the corridor will be built in three levels:

  • Ground level: Service roads
  • Middle level: Highway traffic
  • Top level: Metro rail line

This integrated design is expected to support both road and public transport movement on the same corridor, helping manage the increasing traffic load in eastern Hyderabad.

Reddy said the project is expected to benefit around 10 to 12 lakh residents living across nearly 60 to 70 colonies in this part of the city, making it one of the most significant urban mobility proposals currently under consideration in Hyderabad.

Centre likely to fund bulk of project, proposal under review

The proposed corridor, stretching from Panama Junction in LB Nagar to Hayathnagar, is currently under review by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. It is likely to be included in the Annual Plan for 2026-27, after which detailed project execution steps are expected to begin.

In terms of funding, the Centre is expected to bear the majority share of the cost.

  • Central government contribution: Rs 741 crore
  • State government and Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) contribution: Rs 200 crore

Officials have already submitted the proposal, and once approvals are granted, the tendering process will be initiated.

Another double-decker corridor proposed at Madinaguda-BHEL Junction

Apart from the LB Nagar-Hayathnagar project, the minister also announced another double-decker elevated corridor proposal between Madinaguda and BHEL Junction.

This second corridor will span 1.2 km and will include:

  • A four-lane highway on the lower level
  • A two-lane metro rail viaduct on the upper level

The design for this structure also includes modifications near BHEL Junction to ensure it does not interfere with existing infrastructure in the area.

NH-65 widening and wider Telangana road push also underway

Alongside the new elevated corridor proposals, work on the LB Nagar-Malkapur stretch of NH-65 is also moving ahead. This project, estimated at Rs 545 crore, aims to widen the road into a six-lane highway. Around 80 per cent of the work has already been completed.

The state government is also pursuing a broader road development programme under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) Phase-I.

Key highlights of the HAM Phase-I road plan include:

  • 441 projects planned across 34 packages
  • Total road length of 6,092.37 km
  • Estimated cost of Rs 13,006 crore

According to the update shared in the Assembly, tenders for 24 packages have already been received and are currently under evaluation, while the remaining packages are expected to be processed in the coming period.

Rural road connectivity to get Rs 20,000 crore push

Beyond highways and city transport corridors, the Telangana government is also focusing on strengthening rural connectivity.

Reddy said the plan is to improve links between villages, mandals, district headquarters and Hyderabad through better road infrastructure. Under this initiative, BT (blacktop) roads are planned for every village over the next two years.

The government intends to spend around Rs 20,000 crore on this rural roads push, signalling a large-scale effort to improve connectivity across Telangana beyond urban centres.
