Heavy Rain Hits Hyderabad: Residents Stranded as Musi River Floods Low-Lying Areas

Heavy rain overnight left many residents in Hyderabad without homes as the Musi River overflowed, flooding low-lying areas on Saturday.

Residents like Mohammed Khalid from Moosanagar reported water entering their homes around 9 p.m., forcing them to wait outside for the water to recede.

"The rain water entered our homes at 9 p.m. and we are waiting outside of our home without sleep for the water to recede," said Mohammed Khalid, whose house in Moosanagar was flooded.

The sudden flood caught many residents off guard, as no prior warnings or alerts were issued. Shaheen, another affected resident, expressed frustration over the lack of announcements:

"This year, there was no announcement like it used to happen earlier. Clothes, rations, refrigerator, beds have been soaked. We are used to floods but announcements would have helped," said Shaheen.

Musi River Overflows: Homes and Streets Submerged

The overflowing Musi River inundated houses across Hyderabad, leaving residents stranded and worried about their belongings. A HYDRAA officer confirmed the unexpected nature of the flood:

"It was a sudden flood. There were no announcements," the officer said.

To ensure public safety, electricity supply in the affected areas was cut off to prevent accidents. The current flooding mirrors historical events, such as the September 28, 1908 flood, when rain in Vikarabad filled the Himayatsagar reservoir, causing widespread flooding in Chaderghat.

Hyderabad has faced multiple flooding incidents due to reservoir overflow and heavy rains. Past events highlight the importance of flood preparedness and timely communication to mitigate damage.
