Seven high-speed rail corridors announced
Presenting the Union Budget on Sunday, February 1, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced plans to develop seven high-speed rail corridors linking important urban centres.
"In order to promote an environmentally-sustainable passenger system, we will develop seven high-speed rail corridors between cities as growth connectors," she said, while presenting the 1 hour and 25 minutes Union Budget.
Hyderabad to be linked with three major cities
According to the Finance Minister, Hyderabad will be directly connected through high-speed rail corridors with Pune, Bengaluru and Chennai. Other proposed routes include Mumbai-Pune, Chennai-Bengaluru, Delhi-Varanasi and Varanasi-Siliguri.
These corridors are expected to significantly reduce travel time, improve inter-city connectivity and support economic growth along the routes. At present, work on one high-speed rail corridor between Ahmedabad and Mumbai is already underway, marking India's first such project.
New dedicated freight corridor from east to west
The Budget also focuses on sustainable cargo transportation. Sitharaman announced a new dedicated freight corridor connecting Dankuni in West Bengal to Surat in Gujarat.
She said that to promote environmentally-sustainable movement of cargo, she proposes to establish this new corridor, which will complement the existing Eastern and Western Dedicated Freight Corridors that are currently operational across multiple states and districts.
University townships and education infrastructure boost
Beyond rail infrastructure, the Budget outlined major initiatives in education and social infrastructure. The Centre will set up five university townships near major industrial logistics centres to strengthen the link between education, industry and employment.
Presenting the Budget in the Lok Sabha, the Finance Minister also announced the establishment of one girls' hostel in every district across the country, noting that India has over 700 districts.
In addition, the Budget proposes support for the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies, Mumbai, to set up content laboratories in 15,000 secondary schools nationwide, aimed at boosting creative and digital skills among students.
