Andhra Pradesh Elections: A Crucial Battle For TDP And YSRCP
The upcoming Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections in Andhra Pradesh are critical for both the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP). For TDP leader Chandrababu Naidu, it's a fight for survival, while YSRCP's Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy faces a tough challenge to maintain his position.
On Monday, elections were held for all 25 Lok Sabha seats and 175 Vidhan Sabha seats in Andhra Pradesh. Jagan Mohan Reddy is relying on his government's popular schemes to win, whereas Naidu is hoping to use the state government's five-year anti-incumbency and the strength of the NDA opposition alliance to his advantage.

In the 2019 elections, the YSRCP led by Jagan Reddy nearly eliminated the opposition by securing 151 assembly seats and 22 Lok Sabha seats. This time, the competition is directly between YSRCP and the NDA, which includes TDP, BJP, and Jana Sena Party (JSP). They aim to highlight the failures of Jagan's government, especially in tackling unemployment.
The unresolved capital dispute is another hot topic. Jagan has proposed developing Amaravati as the legislative capital and Kurnool as the judicial capital. He also plans to make Visakhapatnam the state capital if he wins in 2024. In contrast, TDP Chief Chandrababu Naidu has criticized this three-capital plan.
Muslim reservation is a significant issue in this election. Despite TDP's efforts to address it, their stance seems weak against Jagan's promise to maintain a 4% Muslim reservation. The BJP's clear stance against Muslim reservation has been used by Reddy to challenge Naidu.
On welfare schemes, YSRCP promises to increase the monthly welfare pension from Rs 3,000 to Rs 3,500. Meanwhile, the NDA is offering financial assistance of Rs 3,000 per month to unemployed youth.
Despite a significant loss in the 2019 assembly elections, TDP's vote share shows it still has a strong base. YSR Congress received 49.95% of votes while TDP got 39.17%. In Lok Sabha elections, Jagan Mohan's party received about 50% of votes, with TDP close behind at about 41%.
The election results in Andhra Pradesh could be surprising. The state has seen many changes in the last five years. While Jagan Mohan Reddy previously benefited from a wave of sympathy, Chandrababu Naidu now finds an electoral advantage following his arrest. With numerous welfare schemes in play, the outcome remains uncertain.
