When Shadows Creep: Unmasking The Threat Of Doxxing

Are you a victim of doxxing? If you're using a smartphone or the internet via a computer, there's a high chance you're being doxxed. Let's delve into the dark world of doxxing, understand its implications, and explore ways to protect yourself.

Doxxing is short for 'dropping dox' (documents). It involves revealing private or identifying information about an individual or organisation - such as home addresses, phone numbers, or financial information - without your consent. This information is often compiled from social media profiles, public records, or obtained through hacking. Once exposed, this data can be misused for harassment, stalking, and even physical harm. While the internet allows us to communicate anonymously, it also has its downside.

Unmasking The Threat Of Doxxing

THE PERILS OF DOXXING

Doxxing is a serious threat with far-reaching consequences. It can lead to:

Harassment: Doxxed individuals become targets for online and offline abuse, including hate speech, threats, and intimidation. There are many instances when a jilted lover or an online troll leaks the victim's phone number or address.

Stalking: Private information allows stalkers to track victims, creating a constant sense of fear and vulnerability. The United Nations estimates that 95% of online harassment, abusive language, and denigrating content are directed at women.

Loss of Reputation: Exposed information can damage careers and ruin personal lives, leading to job loss, social alienation, and financial hardship.

Safety Concerns: In extreme cases, doxxing can put individuals at risk of physical violence and endanger their safety.

Hackers are getting smarter at exploiting online vulnerabilities to gather personal information. Click baits, social media engineering tricks, phishing emails, and malware can be used to trick victims into revealing personal details. Hackers can also exploit security loopholes in websites and databases to steal sensitive information.

THE LEGAL LANDSCAPE

Laws around doxxing vary across the globe. In India, there are no specific laws against doxxing, but it can be prosecuted under existing laws related to stalking, harassment, and defamation. Cyber Stalking is a punishable offence and attracts section 354 (D), 509 IPC, and section 67 under the I.T Amendment Act 2008. When a person publishes or sends salacious material, Information Technology Act, 2000 (amended in 2008) via electronic media is to be charged under Section 67 of the Act.

THE SHADY ROLE OF BIG TECH

The technology behemoths who earn billions through online platforms have often been found guilty of not putting enough guardrails to protect the users. They have been repeatedly slammed for 'stealing' and selling user data. Earlier this month, Google agreed to delete all data it collected from American users who were using incognito mode. We sometimes use the incognito mode on Google Chrome because it promises not to snoop on the users. But Google has been quietly collecting billions of records.

The fight against doxxing requires vigilance - both from individuals and tech giants. One can only hope that in our online world privacy remains a fundamental right, not a privilege.
