What does it mean to be poor in India: In pictures
What does it mean to be poor in India? In a country where there were 363 million people or 29.5% of India's 1.2 billion people who lived in poverty in 2011-12, little has been done by the Government to lift poverty.
The Rangarajan panel considers people living below Rs 47 a day as poor in urban areas but at time when the country is facing high inflation, how much this new definition of poverty will help poor.
OneIndia visited a slum area near Hazrat Nizamuddin, New Delhi to interact with a few.
"At a time when prices are surging high its difficult for us to make a living in the national capital. Little has been done by the Government to ensure our safety here. Who cares for poor in this country. People who have money are only being listened. There is no water, electricity here and goondas often come here and beat are people, even cops are not serious about are safety. I am originally from Bihar and have been living here from the past 27 years," says Md Rehman, a resident of the slum.
"I voted for Congress this time but BJP came to power. I only expect from the new Government to give us electricity and water, says Rehman on being asked whether he voted.
