Universe's Gallery: 2023's Quirkiest & Coolest Cosmic Images

As the year 2023 comes to an end let's peep behind the cosmic curtain. A swirling symphony of stars and shadows lies in the vast darkness of the cosmos - a playground of the unimaginable, where mysteries are lurking in every corner, there are dreamy nebulae and fiery supernovas. This year, the whispers of this magnificence grew louder, thanks to our newest eye in the skies: the James Webb telescope.

The telescopes pierced the dust, revealing secrets hidden since the beginning of time. we got to see newer galaxies shimmering in their newborn light, stars igniting in fiery nurseries, and planets whispering of possibilities of harbouring life. The hunt is on for an alien life form. But beyond that, it's about understanding our origins. But the James Webb Telescope isn't alone. Hubble, Spitzer and Chandra - each a cosmic lens, captured detailed imagery of the grand fabric of space and time holding together the Universe.

So, let us plunge into this ocean of wonders, and look at the best images of our Universe revealed this year:

The James Webb snapped this super cool picture of baby stars being born. This is the Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex, the closest star-forming region to Earth. The young stars at the centre of many of these discs are similar in mass to the Sun or smaller.

Imagine a giant star, 30 times bigger than our sun, throwing a tantrum. That's what's happening 15,000 light-years away, where a star called Wolf-Rayet star or WR 124 is getting ready to explode into a supernova. Captured by James Webb, the image shows WR 124 in its final stages. When stars that huge run out of hydrogen to burn in their core, they begin to fuse heavier elements instead. In the process creating powerful blasts of energy.

The James Webb Space Telescope snapped this tantalising image of Ring Nebula with unprecedented detail. Formed by a star throwing off its outer layers as it runs out of fuel, the Ring Nebula is an archetypal planetary nebula. The object is also known as M57 and NGC 6720, and is relatively close to Earth at roughly 2,500 light-years away.

Hubble Space Telescope celebrated its 33rd launch anniversary with an ethereal photo of a nearby star-forming region, NGC 1333.
The nebula is located approximately 960 light-years away.

The last image on our list is galaxy NC 3256 which lies about 120 million light-years away. This distorted galaxy is the wreckage of a head-on collision between two massive spiral-shaped galaxies. Astronomers think that this cataclysmic collision took place around 500 million years ago.

So, next time you look up at the stars, remember this picture. It's a reminder that even though space seems quiet, there's a whole bunch of baby stars having a blast, and maybe even making new Earths along the way.
