The End Of iphone: U.S. Wants It To Become An Android

Apple is quite literally the apple of the eyes of billions around the world. For decades, riding on the tech wave, Apple has enjoyed an incredibly powerful position, with its tightly controlled ecosystem allowing it to dictate terms to both consumers and developers. But all that is set to change in the face of increased antitrust scrutiny and mounting user frustration over inflexibility and high prices. The U.S Department of Justice (DoJ) has filed an antitrust lawsuit against Apple, accusing the company of stifling competition in the smartphone market.

Apple is accused of tightly restricting which apps can be downloaded and forcing developers to use its payment systems with hefty 30% commissions, the U.S government claims the tech behemoth has engaged in anti-competitive practices that eliminate consumer choice. The world's second most valuable company by market cap ($2.660 Trillion), says that the DoJ's aim is to dismantle the iPhone's unique selling proposition - its integrated and secure ecosystem. The Tim Cook owned company argues that forcing them to adopt an open-source model, like Android, would compromise user privacy and security, the very features that differentiate iPhones.

The U.S. antitrust effort isn't the only one, the tech behemoth has come under increased scrutiny. In 2021, South Korea passed a law forcing Apple and Google to allow alternative app stores on their devices, a move met with strong resistance from both companies. Apple wants to firmly guard its crown jewel and maintain its exclusivity. There were similar moves by European Union regulators. New laws and rules imposed across the 27-nation bloc have forced Apple's hand in making its platforms and hardware more open and user-friendly. It has been mandated to switch to USB-C charging cables for the latest iPhone models by the end of 2024. The idea is to have one universal charger to reduce e-waste. The flip side for Apple is that its chargers cost around Rs 5,000, compared to a Rs 1,500, similar chargers by other brands. iPhone users will soon enjoy the convenience of being able to power up their devices using the same ubiquitous cables as everyone else.

Apple says that it provides complete privacy and its phone could not be hacked, an argument which lures the users to stay loyal to the brand. But the logic sounds hollow looking at Apple's seemingly hypocritical approach to different markets. In China, the world's largest smartphone market, Apple happily tweaked its App Store rules to comply with the Chinese government regulations. This included removing apps deemed politically sensitive, raising concerns about Apple prioritising profits over user privacy and freedom of expression. Critics point out that if they can adapt their model for the Chinese market, why can't they do the same for a more open approach in the U.S? This raises questions about Apple's true commitment to their supposed unwavering security principles.

There are roughly 1.46 billion active iPhone users globally. This constitutes approximately 18% of the total smartphone user base estimated at 4.88 billion. For too long, Apple has dictated anti-competitive terms and extracted high prices, promising privacy and premium benefits of its cult-like brand appeal. But now, with antitrust enforcers cracking the whip and irate customers demanding change, Apple might have to take a smaller bite.
