Pakistani aggression along LoC: Will talking tough approach dissuade neighbouring country?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had on Tuesday fired first salvo at Pakistan for continuing proxy war of terrorism against India, saying it has lost the strength to fight a conventional war. This is the first sharp attack on Islamabad by Modi after assuming office.

Modi's strong message to Pakistan

The Prime Minister's speech was hailed by many as a strongly-worded warning against Pakistan, but this sharp attack in the midst of Modi's peace initiatives with Nawaz Sharif Government has left everyone guessing over what has led to this sudden criticism? Another question crossing every mind is: will such harsh talks fall on deaf ears of Pakistani Army and administration?

"The neighbouring country has lost the strength to fight a conventional war, but continues to engage in the proxy war of terrorism," Prime Minister said while addressing troops of Army and the Indian Air Force on his maiden trip to Leh and Ladakh.

Islamabad's brazen defence

There have been constant ceasefire violations from Pakistan along the Line of Control (LoC) since decades and governments prior to Modi have also criticised them, but to no avail. Whenever, New Delhi criticised such provocations, Islamabad had blatantly rejected the former's claims and continued violating the truce. This time again, an outrageous Pakistan dismissed to Modi's tough talk terming it nothing but a baseless rhetoric.

Will Modi's harsh talks fall on deaf ears of Pakistani Army?

"The press reports of Indian accusations, at the highest political level, are most unfortunate, especially as the leadership of Pakistan wishes to establish good neighbourly relations with India," Pakistan Foreign Office Spokeswoman Tasnim Aslam said.

It is time for action not mere talks

In its latest statement, Pakistan made no mention of stopping firing on Indian forward posts in which several soldiers and civilians lost their lives. Hence, it has made it clear that the Pakistani administration is not taking India's objections seriously.

Experts are of views that making such statements are not going to help reduce the Pakistani aggression on Indian soil. Narendra Modi has not done anything new by talking tough over continued ceasefire violations. Even Manmohan Singh-led UPA government, whom Narendra Modi had criticised for failing to send a stern message to Pakistan, had criticised Pakistan for such provocations. But, this is not how people of this nation want their bold Prime Minister act.

Experts feel that the just like his predecessors PM Modi is also in dilemma and his government too has not come up with a strong policy that will force Pakistan from waging proxy war on India.

Even Congressmen are finding Modi's speech to be lacking the much needed aggression. They feel the Indian PM should sound fearsome while addressing Pakistan on such issues and adopt a tit for tat policy if ceasefire is violated by Pakistani forces to facilitate infiltration of terrorists.

There have been more than 50 instances of ceasefire violations from the Pakistan in this year. Not only security personnel several villagers living along the borders were killed and scores were injured in as Pakistani troops used mortars and automatic weapons. This proves that Nawaz Sharif administration either doesn't wants to establish peace with New Delhi or the Army is not under its control.

As per experts, there has been a considerable increase in cases of ceasefire violations ever since Nawaz Sharif government came to power in Pakistan, last year.

Modi has claimed about strengthening the armed forces it is time he has to go walk the talk. But so far his government has not shown any tough stand in this regard.
