In pictures: Delhiites reel under scorching spell

Delhiites got no respite from the sweltering heat with mercury soaring to 41.3 degree celsius on Friday. Palam was even hotter at 44 degrees celsius. This was one of the highest temperature in the month of July in 2013-14. This is only the sixth year since 1969 when the maximum has touched 42 degrees in July. Last year mercury only soared as high as 39.2 degree, a Met official said.

The prevailing heat wave condition in North-India is the result of weak monsoon this year due to El Nino weather phenomenon. It is also a challenge in front of the new Government to prepare for the drought like condition which can severely effect the GDP.

Met has also indicated that the national capital may face some rain from next week.

"There has been an absence of low pressure systems over Bay of Bengal that would feed the southwest Monsoon. Several parts of the northwest India are reeling under a heatwave and have recorded below normal rain," said a Met official.
