The National Curriculum Framework 2023, aims to renovate the education ecosystem. It aspires to incorporate values of equity, holistic development and multidimensional learning to schools, especially recognising the importance of early childhood education by articulating different requirements of different age groups of students. NCF's vision to foster a platform for student-centric education runs congruent with the 5Cs framework that aims for transformational education. With its emphasis on communication, cooperation, critical thinking, curiosity and creativity, the 5Cs provide the initiatives of NCF such as multilingual education, strong student-teacher relationship, the inclusion of peer and familial networks in the learning process, and a more stable direction.

How can we incorporate the 5 Cs in the National Curriculum Framework (NCF)?

This article explores the relationship between the National Curriculum Framework and the 'Breadth of Skills'. It has the potential to incorporate for an effective and conscious future-driven reform in the education system of India.

Multidisciplinary Studies and Holistic Skills

Today's world is not divided into water-tight compartments of Sciences, Finance and Liberal Arts. The job market as well as social interactions demand skills that run across disciplines. Foundational education is hence required to expose children to the spectrum of competencies ranging from logical and deducting capabilities of critical thinking, analytic and exploratory capabilities of curiosity and interactional and relational capacities of cooperation and communication.

The National Curriculum Framework aims to eliminate the barriers and limitations of disciplines and mainstream curricular activities. Its emphasis on novel subject combinations and interdisciplinary streams along with vocational curriculum, and creative arts, should be seen as a monumental opportunity to engage students with holistic 21st century skills. Multidisciplinary studies and emphasis on sports, and creative arts allow students to express themselves in diverse modalities allowing the development of their unique interests and strengths. School systems and educators along with caregivers should focus on providing students opportunities to harness their potential in the combination of curricular modalities that suit them, for it is only then that they will be able to garner curiosity in their school endeavours and choose creative ways to perform.

Education Ecosystem and Student Development

NCF attributes to educators, caregivers and school authorities the responsibility to effectively participate in creating a student-centric education ecosystem. It promotes the idea that infrastructural and social transformations within the educational premises and outside it are necessary for students to get the support they need for their development. Such transformations to create a holistic environment in school systems should be led by considerations of the significance of communication, cooperation, creativity, curiosity and critical thinking skills. NCF aims to reform pedagogical tools in favour of assessment systems, feedback mechanisms and classroom engagement that aid students' cognitive, physical and intellectual enhancement. In congruent with NCF's vision, learning processes inclusive of play-based learning, theatre, role-play demonstrations, and field exposures further students' critical and creative competencies. Further, group projects, team evaluation and practising peer reliance in classrooms expose students to situations where they learn cooperation and communication, sensitive listening and empathic responsiveness. Hence, attempts at architectural and systemic reforms in classrooms when incorporating consideration for holistic, relational and cognitive skills encapsulated by the 5Cs framework will hold the potential to execute the vision of the NCF.

The National Curriculum Framework upholds that a " non-dichotomous approach to human development gives clear pathways and direction towards a more holistic education." It aims to incorporate into the education ecosystem an approach to learning that is considerate of student needs and health. It understands the effective development of students, their uniqueness, their abilities and their strengths as an important predecessor to them becoming equipped, prepared citizens of the real world. The 5Cs, provide such a vision with the optimum framework it requires to execute its values and objectives with practical initiatives.
