Rakesh Patania is an experienced politician in the Nurpur constituency. He contested as an Independent and BJP candidate twice in his political career. He won in 2007 and lost in 2012 as an independent candidate. Won the 1998 Assembly Election and lost in 2003 as BJP candidate.

BJP's decision to field Rakesh Pathania, who had contested the 2012 election as independent to secure 23,179 votes, has left the party's 2012 election candidate, Ranbir Singh Nikka, unhappy.
