Ashok Gehlot, at the helm of Congress' affairs in Gujarat

Former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot is the Congress' general secretary in-charge of Gujarat. Gehlot replaced senior leader Gurudas Kamat as Gujarat in-charge in April this year.

He has a significant role to play as the Congress has been out of power in Gujarat for over two decades and is looking to make a comeback.

Gujarat is also important for the Congress at the national level as it has been beaten in several states by the BJP since its drubbing in the 2014 general elections. Punjab has been the only saving grace for the party where it won comfortably.

Gehlot has been working frantically and meeting Patidar leaders to gather support for the Congress. Gehlot has also stressed that Congress gives a lot of importance to the youth and priority will be given to them in ticket distribution ahead of Gujarat elections.

He had said that Congress has good chances of winning in Gujarat as "people were fed up of the misgovernance by BJP in Gujarat."

Gehlot was the Chief Minister of Rajasthan from 1998 to 2003 and again from 2008 to 2013. He hails from Jodhpur and represents Sardarpura constituency of Jodhpur in Rajasthan Assembly.

A Science and Law graduate, he also holds an MA degree in Economics.
