The Goa illegal mining hit headlines in 2011 after the Shah Commission initiated probe into the illegalities pertaining to the mining industry in Goa.

The main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) sought a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe on Nov 4, 2011 into the alleged illegal mining of iron ore in the State.
