India's First Madam President!

India is celebrating its 60th year of Independence in 2007. Our nation is flying high in the international arena. And this year Indians have one more reason to cheer. For the first time India gets a woman President, Ms Pratibha Patil. She was elected as the First lady of India on 25 July 2007. Patil succeeded the People's President A P J Abdul Kalam.

Though its a matter of pride it took the democratic, sovereign, socialist, secular nation 60 years to have a woman President. Pratibha Patil, born on December 19, 1934 is the 13th President of India.

Journey of Pratibha Patil

Pratibha PatilPratibha Patil, lawyer by profession, began her political career in 1962 at the age of 27. She became a Deputy Minister of Education in 1967. From 1972-768 she was a Cabinet Minister of Maharashtra. An adherent Congress follower she had handled almost all portfolios from social welfare to tourism in the state ministry till 1985. In the same year, Ms patil was elected as the deputy chairwoman of the Rajya Sabha. Her journey to national politics began. She became the MP from Amaravati.

Pratibha Patil became the first woman Governor of Rajasthan (2004-2007). She resigned from the post to contest for the highest constitutional post, the Presidentship. She was elected as the President of India on July 25 2007. Till today Ms Patil has never lost an election that she has contested.

India has seen strong women leaders like Sarojini Naidu, Aruna Asaf Ali, Subhadra Joshi and many others who emerged leaders fighting all odds.

Women politicians in India have come a long way. Mrs.Vijay Lakshmi Pandit was the first Indian woman to hold a post in the cabinet. Mrs Indira Gandhi was the first Prime Minister of India. She was the one who made world sit-up and take notice of the potential ofIndira Gandhi Indian women.

Sonia Gandhi, Shiela Dixit, Uma Bharti, Jayalalitha, Vasundhra Raje and Mamata Banerjee are worth mentioning in this context.

Not only in Politics, Indian women have excelled in every walk of life. Whether it is sports, entertainment, literature, technology everywhere we can hear applauses for her.

The first PM of India, Jawaharlal Nehru said, "you can tell the condition of a nation by looking at the status of its women". This is absolutely true. Woman of any nation is the mirror to its civilization.
